Effects of stress on pregnancy/associated with stomach issues?

Hi everyone,

Some of you may have read my recent post about dealing with a possible pregnancy discrimination associated with a demotion at my job.

Obviously the most important thing is making sure our little guy is okay.  So I wanted to make this separate post about a possibly stress-related issue that has popped up.

Since dealing with the level of high stress this week I have been experiencing diarrhea.  Not horrible...I mean, no soiling myself or having to get to a bathroom like lightning kind of thing.  But it's happening 1-2x/day and is rather loose.  I have a history of this when stressed, but of course I've never also been pregnant during it!

Any advice?  I am 26 weeks.  Anyone else had diarrhea during this stage?  I am not cramping.  I do not have any soreness or pains.  Baby is still kicking throughout the day, although he has shifted positions and the kicks are a little muffled (I have an anterior placenta)...horrible timing on that to make me worry even more haha.

Thanks in advance for any advice/thoughts.

  • Make sure you are drinking LOTS of water! It sounds like it's stressed related and it will probably pass. What helps with your stress? Massage? Exercising? Try to relax and drink LOTS!!

This. Lots of water. I know it's hard to relax when you're stressed...I'm dealing with anxiety (went off my meds) during this pregnancy and it stresses me out more when ppl say I have to relax. Do what you have to do. Also, try to get to bed a little earlier and catch some extra z's.

Keep in touch with your body and your baby. It's reassuring to feel those kicks during the day and lets me know that baby girl is handling things just fine.

  • Stay hydrated and call your OB to see if they suggest anything.  Sorry you are dealing with this!

  • I have IBS and during my last pregnancy it seemed to calm down a bit but this pregnancy it's completely out of control!!! I have stomach aches and diarrhea almost every day. Its horrible and it stresses me out. I get anxiety being anywhere that doesn't have direct access to a bathroom. I refuse to go on our boat for solely this reason
  • Try to treat the anxiety and the digestive discomfort will take care of itself. Ask your dr about relaxation techniques or maybe there is some med that is ok for you to take at this stage in pregnancy. Hang in there!

@meganmccr‌ this sounds like the way I used to be before I found out I was gluten intolerant. Since going on a 100% gluten free diet I feel like a completely different person!! Have you looked into gluten sensitivity? It might be worth a shot.
  • Like the other ladies have said, stay hydrated! You could also try some peppermint tea, it'll help sooth your stomach.

  • Me too @rlyttle!   Doctors always passed my issues off as IBS until I got a Celiac diagnosis.  Stress always makes it worse though no matter what I eat sometimes, so it is important (for me at least) to control that too :)

  • likely stress related. i agree with LOTS of water and also bulk up your diet with fiber rich foods. it will help to make your stools a little more solid.
  • I consider myself to be a "stomach reactor" when stressed. So I would think it is normal that yo are feeling this way. Different people react in different ways - headache, anxiety, fatigue, etc. For me the tummy is always the first thing to go. Heck I've been having tummy issues this week anyways and I'm not even super stressed. Aside from what other posters have said about hydration, etc I would suggest just stepping it back to bland foods. BRAT diet if needed - bananas rice applesauce toast. Just so you are not provoking your body anymore.
