American Girl Age?

So the big question is at what age did you guys give American girl dolls- the larger kind?

My daughter (18 months) has a bitty baby she plays with for hours a day, she feeds it, burps it, and insists on taking it for walks in her a stroller. It is basically the cutest thing ever.

I never had dolls but my kid is so crazy about this thing that when I saw an American girl Samantha doll at a yard sale for a steal I had to get it for her. I would like to have her get really excited about it when I give it to her, so I think I will put it away for a few years so it will be a "big deal" when she gets it. Any ideas on how long to wait or how to amp up the excitement for it when she does eventually get it? I don't care about it getting destroyed, more just that she can appreciate the history aspect and enjoy playing with the doll. Thanks!

  • DD1 got hers for her 5th birthday. We didn't get a historical one. She loves her "Lizzie" but goes through phases with playing and not playing with her. She was old enough to understand how special it is and not destroy it.
We got it a little on the young side but I figured for the price se would have more play years with it.

  • Ooops. DH reminded me the one I sent in was one of my well taken care of childhood ones; the one on ebay was the one I bought for my niece :)

  • I got my Molly doll for my 9th birthday along with the books and the accessories for her first book. I still have her and all of those things.  Molly looked like me and I was definitely a reader, so she thrilled me.  The other girls were great too, but I'd most definitely recommend waiting to see if she's even interested in the historical things before deciding on a historical doll, per say.

My sister was not a history fan, but loved her "look like me" AG doll.  She also got hers for her 9th birthday.  I gave my oldest niece some old dolls we no longer wanted - including my sister's AG doll - for her 7th birthday and it kind of fell flat.  Conversely the 5 year old loves my old bitty baby.  It depends on the kid.

  • I got Kirsten when I was 8, and my 7 year old cousin got Samantha at the same time. I LOVED that doll and read all the books for all the dolls. I know they are expensive, but I think it's great that you can then give the outfits and accessories for following holidays.

  • We brought our DD to Chicago to the American Girl Doll store to buy her a doll.  She was 6.  We didn't do any of the extras they offer.
  • Thanks for all your help! I really like that idea of trying to start with the books and if she gets into it give the doll then. Maybe around 6 at the earliest? The history aspect is really the whole point for us but then again, it makes sense like people said to get "more years of play".
