Delayed vaccinations

Hey ladies. Max has his two month appointment tomorrow and I am expecting they will want to give him shots. Nobody has talked to us about delaying anything. For those who don't know, he was born 6 weeks before his due date. Would you want to delay them? I am nervous about how he might react because he is still a bit smaller than a typical two month old. I am thinking he should get Dtap and hep B round 2 for sure, but would you forgo the other ones for now? Any recommendations on what is best to delay? Have any of you done this before? Thanks so much for your help!

Re: Delayed vaccinations

  • We vaccinate on schedule, so I don't have any first hand input, but I know our office has a second schedule for people who want to delay or space them out. Ask your office if they have a recommendation?

  • We delayed with my first, and a couple of them with my second.  Not sure what we will do with the twins.  Make sure your insurance covers vaccines when they are delayed because you have to come back for extra visits (if you do what we did and do like 2 vaccines a month rather than 4 every other month).  It should be a non-issue now with the new health care, but just to be safe!

  • My kids were born at the same age and our pedi didn't recommend delaying any so we are doing the whole shebang at their 2 month. The only thing I had asked about was doing Hep B #2 at their one month so that it was 1 less shot on the same day but it was too close to when they got the first dose so we couldn't.

  • We had a 32 weeker and did not delay.  With lower preemie immunity, it was all the more important to get those shots in.  Plus, I did not want my fragile preemie at the doctor's office around sick kids any more than she had to be, and delaying usually means additional visits.  In general, delaying is just more risk with no benefit.
  • I am overdue... but we are planning to delay some vaccinations. Here is a good article that shows what's scheduled. https://www.drmomma.org/2011/01/cdc-mandatory-vaccine-schedule-1983-vs.html  i would research each like it recommends. I get that things are different than they were 20 years ago or whatever but do our kids need 7 rounds of influenza shots? And research what is in the shots and the side effects.

  • Thanks everyone for your answers. I didn't really have an opinion one way or the other. It makes me nervous for him to have a bunch at once and I wasn't sure if his size would be a factor in how it would affect him. I'll talk it over with his doctor in the morning!

  • My good friend had a 25 week miracle baby and I know he received all his vaccines on schedule without issue. Definitely talk to your doctor about your options!

  • My ped office strictly follows cdc schedule so it wasn't an option. It was something I knew when I chose them and I am totally fine and comfortable with it. I love our peds.

I didn't have a premie but I did delay with DD. Basically we vaccinated on schedule but one shot at a time. So if she would have gotten 3 shots at whatever check up, as dictated by the CDC schedule, we would go in a week before and have one shot, then wait a week or two depending on how long the "reaction window" was on a particular vaccine. Then we would go in for the next shot and so on. I have a bunch of allergies so I just wanted to make sure we would be easily able to distinguish an allergen if DD had a reaction. We will do the same with this baby.

This is what the plan is for us (I go to our first pedi appointment tomorrow so I'll find out tomorrow if it's an option). Especially since DH had a reaction to the TDap vaccine and I apparently had one to MMR when I got it.

I'd argue that because of the preemie status it is more important to stay on track with the vaccinations than it normally would be.  Preemies can have mediocre immune systems - anything you can do to booster immunity is a good thing.

The exception would be if you or your DH have a history of bad reactions to immunizations, or some form of medicine allergy.  Then I'd suggest just talking to your pediatrician about options.
This is exactly what I was thinking. I personally wouldn't delay unless the ped said we needed to, especially with a preemie :)
  • DS was caught up on vaccinations by the time he reached his EDD and it was really important to his pedi that he stay caught up. So we never did a delayed schedule after leaving the NICU.

I'm not new. I just hate The Bump.

  • Also, one thing our pedi commented on when giving me the handout on the 2 month vaccines, was that the current vaccines have far fewer proteins in them than they did when we were getting them. Maybe @kaysa2 can explain this better, but my basic understanding of this is that it means that while the babies might be getting more vaccines, they are exposed to less stuff because of the fewer proteins. I didn't ask for a lot of clarification because we were definitely getting the vaccines anyways and both babies were sort of done after being poked and prodded, but the pedi acted like this was a really good thing.
