Baby Oil for Sunscreen?

Next weekend we will be pool side at DH's family pool. Would you use baby oil to protect your LO?

Seriously, we will be at the pool and I will keep DD in the shade, but am still worried about UV rays. What brand sunscreen did/would you use?

& yes, I already talked to our pedi and she said pool was fine for DD and that she'll enjoy kicking in the water (we'll see).

  • I'm pretty sure I used to use baby oil to get a tan. It won't protect her skin from the sun.

I've also read/heard not to use sun block on babies under 6 months. I actually plan to ask my pedi about this because we're planning to spend a few days down the shore with family in a few weeks. There's gotta be something that is safe to use. I'm interested in other's responses...'
I asked our pedi and she said use sunblock if you are around water with LO. She says she has seen to many babies with accidental sunburns.

  • Definitely sunscreen, regardless of age. Also probably an umbrella, a hat, a rash guard, and whatever other kind of shade I could come up with.

Baby oil will amplify the sun's rays and fry your baby like an ant under a magnifying glass.

  • I'm an Esthetician. I don't know if you meant actual baby oil. Because that will greatly magnify the sun's rays, so definitely do not use. A mineral based sun block plus a hat would be best. Mineral meaning titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. California Baby has a ultra sensitive skin mineral sun block. It won't sting eyes or irritate baby skin. Also don't use a chemical sunscreen.
  • Lol. I kinda figured, but you know somebody probably thinks it's a great idea.

  • I've heard panenten the diaper cream works as it's zinc oxide. You can mix a little coconut oil to make it spread easier.
  • Haha my bad! Seriously, you never know...
  • Please don't put baby oil on her. It will burn her skin. I used it to tan

    It's a BOY

  • Oh I should have read the rest of the thread. My bad! Glad you aren't putting oil on her lol

  • I called DH into the room and told him a super stupid question was asked and be prepared for the show that will follow.

I'm now kinda disappointed at the lack of drama.
  • Sorry @florassecret‌! You all should know me a little better than that :)

  • My pedi said sunscreen isn't recommended but if I was planning on having LO outside all day that I should put it on his arms and legs and use a sun hat to protect his head and face.
  • My pedi said sunscreen is fine and to use one with physical blockers like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide rather than chemical blockers. She recommended Neutragena Baby sunscreen and said that's what she uses.
  • I was reading online sunscreen blocks their skin from sweating but a little on their face hands and feet won't hurt if it's a thin rubbed in layer.

I just bought some green beaver. It's Canadian and I know some families who use it.
  • My pedi told me no sunscreen. Basically he said to keep him covered or in the shade this summer and away from bugs. Interesting that others say it's fine though, I've been so paranoid when we go to the park.
  • @florassecret I totally snickered at "green beaver." Juvenile, I know. =))

  • I wouldn't use baby oil. I actually think that would do more harm than good.
We use Blue Lizard baby. Highly recommend.
