Paying a Babysitter

How much would/do you pay a babysitter for an infant? What about an infant and a toddler?

DS is 3 and we have never had a babysitter besides a family member until this coming Saturday. We are leaving DD, who is 2 months, with a babysitter while we take DS to a county fair truck pull (woohoo) and we aren't sure how much to pay her. I asked her what her going rate is and she very politely told me she was okay with whatever. We would like to leave both kids with her at some point to get in a date night or two, also.

I don't remember what I was even paid when I babysat a million years ago, so please enlighten me with what is a good rate, without breaking the bank, now a days. TIA :)

Re: Paying a Babysitter

  • Totally depends on where you live.
    So, where are you?

In the greater Seattle area, $10-$15/hr for one kid is very common.  (Ok, where I am, $10/hr is hard to find!)  I think an additional $2-3/hr for each additional child is normal as well.

  • I'm in the Pittsburgh area, and your amount was what I was guessing. Thanks!

  • We live in Chicago and I think the average pay would be $12-$15 for one kid and $2-3 more for additional kids.  This is why we never go out, haha!

Wow. I guess I need to move to your area and babysit. We have only used one a couple times. Her rate is $5/hr but I gave her $6. DS was about a year old at the time and he was in bed when she got here. She is 14. We are in northern Michigan.
  • Wisconsin here and our sitters usually run about $5/hour.  We usually give them a little more though, especially if lo was putting up a fight for nap/bedtime.

  • We live in a high cost of living area and pay $15-$18 an hour for one kid. With our usual sitter we could probably do 2 kids for $20 an hour. Again it all depends on where you live.
  • We are in Atlanta, well, just outside, and we pay our high school babysitter 7 and hour for one, and 10 and hour for two.  If she is coming over just to be here while the girls sleep at night, we pay her 7.

You can pay high schoolers a little less than college students or adults, in my experience.

  • I pay my two 20+ year old sitters $13-15/hour for one kid.  We live in NC.  We definitely pay at the higher end of the scale, but our sitters make themselves available when we call.

  • We live in Michigan and pay $10/hr for one toddler in the day, watched by a college student.  The student does not clean up or feed DD, but is not here for any sleeping and is not allowed to turn on the TV, so must watch her/play with her the whole time.  We would pay a high school student $8.  According to care.com, the rate in our area is $8/hr, but I have no idea how many kids, whether it includes full time nannying and daycare, etc.  I made $1/hr/kid back in the dark ages.
  • Depends on the age of the babysitter and experience. I live right outside NYC and would never pay $18-$20 per hour. I think that is super steep.

Most times I go out, its at night, so they have 1-2 hours with my 2 and 5 year old, then sit on the couch for 3 or 4 hours. My babysitters always say whatever i want so I give $12-$15 and round up. So for 3 hours 15 minutes, I end up giving $40-$50.

For a 2 month old for a few hours, I think $10-$15 is fine. I wouldn't necessarily give more for 2 kids.

I babysat my whole life when I was young, and didn't expect more for multiple kids for night-time babysitting. It was generally 2 hours of hard work, and then hours of watching TV :)
