Surgery while in 1st trimester?

Has anyone here had surgery in the 1st trimester? I accidentally cut my hand yesterday I have surgery planned for later this week. I'm currently at 12 or 13 weeks. The surgeon or anesthesiologist will talk with my OB about what my anesthesia options are, but those who are not pregnant would get general anesthesia for this type of operation, primarily because a tourniquet (on the arm) would be used for about ~1.5 hours. I find that even having a tourniquet for just a quick blood draw is pretty uncomfortable, and I'm worried that I won't be able to bear it (I'm really bad with pain). I'm assuming that if I'm not under general anesthesia then I don't have to fast beforehand, but I'm worried that if I do have to fast (especially not drink) for so many hours it will be horrible. Any advice or words of wisdom for from anyone who has been through this kind of thing before?

Apologies for double posting this to this group and my BMB. (Not even sure whether I'm allowed to do that.)

Oh goodness. I've never had to consider surgery while pregnant, so I have no advice. But, I wanted to wish you good luck. I know there are safe options,so I'm sure your docs will come up with something.

Thank you! I went for the pre-op stuff today, and they said they would use a block, so I assume that's short-hand for nerve block, but if that doesn't work they'll have to use general, pending my OB's approval. I really hope that nerve block works.
  • Yup, nerve block. Always a risk of needing to do general anyway... how urgent is the surgery? OB should be able to resource for Anesthesia.... good luck!

Update: The nerve block worked! I had managed to sever a tendon, a nerve, and an artery, and if I didn't have the surgery within 1-2 weeks I would have permanently lost the ability to move part of my thumb, and never regained sensation in part of my middle finger. So not life threatening things, but still pretty important in my mind. I am very relieved!
