Catholic School/Sunday School Question

Just kind of a random/possibly silly question...does anyone know that if your child is a parishioner of a church, but goes to a Catholic school that is affiliated with another parish, does your child still need to go to Sunday school???

Re: Catholic School/Sunday School Question

  • I am Jewish, so not the same thing--but I know that some of my friends growing up went to a Hebrew Day School--and they didn't have to go to Hebrew School. They still were able to be Bar/Bat Mitzvahed. Typically if you DIDN'T go to Hebrew School, the synagogue wouldn't have you get Bar/Bat Mitzvahed there.

  • I went to catholic school. I didn't know Catholics had Sunday school. We had ccd. I didn't have to go to ccd anymore when I went to catholic school. We did all the sacraments as part of school.

  • I went to Catholic School and we did not go to CCD (not sure what it stands for but it was "Sunday School" for the kids from public schools).

DD1 is in Catholic school and no she doesn't need to do any other religious education. All the sacraments are taken care of at school as well. It's a nice bonus.
ETA they call it RE or just religous education now. It was CCD when I was younger too.

  • No they do not need to go to any other religious education classes since they have religion as a subject in school.

I'm just re reading your question. I'm not sure I answered it correctly before. The answer is still no your child wouldn't need to do extra religious education. The kids in our school get communion ect. through the school church. They don't have to go to their home parish. I suppose they could recieve it at their home parish. I'm sure there's paper work involved. Honestly if your child is in Catholic school they will want to recieve the sacraments with all their friends.
Also your home parish will know that you are in Catholic school and not just skipping out on the RE.
    Hope this helps.

  • Can Catholics only receive the sacrament once per week or something? I'm Eastern Orthodox and our only limitation is once per day (and "regular" confession), so this is all fascinating to me.

I would imagine that if your LO wants to recieve the sacrament at church as well as school and is within other requirements, and your parish knows that your child is in Catholic school, there shouldn't be a problem with that. But I could have it totally wrong. ;-)

The sacraments I was referring to was Baptism, confession, communion, and confirmation. A Catholic must take classes to recieve each of these.
You can receive communion everyday. After you have your first holy communion in 2nd grade.
I'm really no expert. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. :)
