What kind of daily reports do you get from your DCPs?

I know that a lot of this will vary with age, but I'm curious about this.

The two centers we've used have basically just given us sheets with times of diaper changes (and if they were pee or BM diapers) along with times of bottles/meals along with quantities.  (ETA naps - I forgot that one)

Once in a blue moon we get a little more written on there, something along the lines of - "had fun finger painting today" or something simple like that.

Is this pretty standard for center-based care?

What's your child-care situation (and ages of kiddos) and what kind of reports do you get at the end of the day?

  • DS was originally in an in-home daycare with just one provider from 3 months-15 months. she was very informal and just gave us a quick verbal report about anything unusual (like he seemed fussy, or didn't finish all his bottles- although we would know that anyway since we'd be getting them back). nothing down on paper.

DS is now 22 months and is at an in-home daycare that has multiple employees. they have about 20 kids. they give us a sheet that tells us if he finished his lunch/snack, his diaper changes (and if they were pee/poop), and when he napped. the sheet has sections for other info, like about what he did that day, if he needed behavior correction, etc., but they never fill the rest out. of course they're happy to elaborate on anything if we ask, but i'd imagine it's just too hectic to be able to give detailed reports on all the kids.

  • From 3 months - 24 months, we pretty much just got the standard info about diaper changes and naps.  They would note anything unusual, like "Did not each much today", but that was about it.  Once it awhile they would put something fun like "Enjoyed playing with blocks today!"

Once he started in the 2 year old room, they stopped documenting the day.  They would if we asked, but they said that most parents don't care (and I agree).  They tell us verbally if there was anything remarkable or out of the ordinary about the day.  When potty training, there was a lot more communication.  We also receive incident reports if there were any injuries.

At the in-home, we got a verbal read out on what was had for lunch, how long the nap was, and most recent diaper change / potty time, usually a cute anecdote of what the kids are up to + any issues of the day.

At the center, we get a daily sheet indicating successful bathroom use, how much of the lunch was eaten, how long DD napped, the theme of the day and a special note of "we went for a walk to the park and saw a flock of geese today" or "we read Green Eggs & Ham today - what a fun day!"

  • When DS first started DC, he was in a small in-home and she was very good about daily reports.  She write the time and quantity of bottles, diaper changes, naps and anything else noteworthy.

We switched DCs and after they move to the one year room, there are no written reports. But his teacher is really great about telling us if there was anything out of the ordinary going on or if there was something he really enjoyed that day.

What the OP describes is pretty much what we received when the girls were infants/tots. In the toddler (18-24 mos) and the 2s room, they do a sheet that has a brief description of their day, what they ate and how well they ate, nap info, and diaper info for those who aren't potty trained. They stop doing daily sheets in the 3s class. They do post a chart that you can glance at to see what kind of day your child had. In the 3s they do smiley face, frowning face, and a kind of in-between face. In the 4s they do green, yellow, or red card.

  • Our center uses DailyConnect in all their rooms. At anytime I can sign in to see how her day is going. They tell us diaper changes, when and what they eat, when and how long they slept, if they go play outside or in a different room. They'll also tell us little things like which book they're reading or what art project they're working on.

We can also send messages back and forth if necessary and they send at least one picture a week, but usually more.

Our daily reports include - times / type of diaper changes, nap start and end times, food and how much he ate of each and, when he was still taking them, bottle times / oz.  We occasionally get notes and reminders for upcoming activities.

  • We use a home daycare. Up until he was about 14 months we got a small sheet of paper that listed out everything that he ate, when he napped and how many times he pooped. Once he was eating all his table food on a regular basis, then we no longer got a paper report. We would just be told how his day went. Now that he is older (almost 18 months) I pick up and generally will just be told if there were any issues or anything that was out of the normal---generally there never. We get a calendar at the beginning of the week for everything he is going to eat, so I know what he ate already.

  • DD is 10 months and in the infant room at a mid-sized center.  She will be in the infant room until she is a confident walker.  Her daily report includes what and at what times she ate and had bottles, when her diaper was changed and whether it was wet or poopy, when and for how long she napped.  One of the teachers usually includes a comment on what she did.  E.g.: "She enjoyed music time today."

DS will be 3 next week.  He is in the 1st preschool room.  When he first started in that room (2.5) we did not get a report.  We requested a report because he is speech delayed and we had a hard time getting him to tell us about his day.  His reports included what he ate, how long he napped, and a brief description of his activities.  E.g.:"He played outside and went down the slide many times, he was a good teacher helper and cleaned up after snack time, he did such and such art project."  He has made leaps and bounds in speech development in the last 2 months so his teacher no longer sends a report, but the teacher and DH discuss the day's activities at pick up and make DS participate in the conversation.

  • We are actually at two different centers-one for my DD who is an infant, and one for my DS who is 2.5.
At DDs center we received a report that indicates time and amounts of food eaten, diaper changes and what type of diaper it was, sleeping schedules, there is a space also for medication and notes. At the top of the sheet when we start the day we write the last time she ate, the last diaper change and what type of diaper it was, and what time she woke up, and her mood. We can also indicate any special instructions for the day or any instructions as to medications.

DSs Center is Montessori and nayce (I think I'm missing a letter there) certified. It is a short sheet that indicates his overall mood (usually happy, once it said happy/aggressive when he was having a gentle hands issue), whether he ate all some or none, whether he slept none, one hour or two hour, whether he wore bug spray when he went outside, and his "favorite activities of the day"- There is also a space sheet where we sometimes get notes like bring more wipes or if he had to be redirected for not listening to "messages".

DD is 6 now, so we get nothing from after school care or summer camp. Here's what I got from DCPs though:
Baby age to 2 years: Diaper change times (and contents), feeding times and quantities, nap time and length, mood
2-3 years: Diaper change or potty training report, feeding times, nap times, mood
3-4 years: No reports unless there was an issue

  • We are at an in-home provider for 2 kids (18 months and almost 3).  Our provider takes pictures (lunch time, play time, etc.) and sends me them (via text messages) throughout the day.  When I pick up, she'll verbally let me know of any issues/concerns (BM or not napping, etc.) or if it was an overall good day.  It is nice to get the pictures throughout the day and she has found this the best way to communicate (vs. paperwork).

  • ^^ I totally agree!  I'd love to have random pictures from my LO's day at daycare.

And thanks to all that have replied - I don't know where I got the impression that some folks were getting super detailed reports (thought I suppose there are a rare few that do), and that my DCP is pretty par for the course.  Makes me feel much better about things!

  • That's pretty much all we got in the infant room plus whatever info that was given in casual conversation at pick-up/drop off.

Now that he's in a toddler room (15 mo. - 2.5 yrs) there's only the casual conversation or a scheduled conversation if there's a reason for that. They do keep a record of diaper changes/potty times but it's for them, not us.

  • Diapers (time/content)
Activities (broken down by gross motor, fine motor, etc. although I don't really pay attention)
    Nap- time/duration
What he ate and how much of it

  • I get a paper every day for my 19 mo old that details what they ate, how they napped, and dirty/wet diaper changes, as well as note about what they learned that day and anything we need to bring listed. My 3 yr old daughter does not get a daily report.
