Spits up breastmilk, but not formula

So after some struggles with breastfeeding I decided to EP and supplement. Now it seems there is a pattern forming where if I give my LO a bottle with BM in it he will often violently spit it up- lots of it. If I give him a bottle of just formula however he may spit up a tiny bit, but it's what I would consider normal. So what's up with that? Is my milk really making him do this? It smells fine and I follow all the rules for storing it. I have a lot stored up in the freezer and would hate to have it all go to waste and would like LO to get the benefits of breastmilk, but this splitting up to the point of almost drowning in it is no good.

  • My kid did this till I went dairy and soy free. I was eating a lot of dairy and soy prior so it was irritating her. Maybe cut one out for a few days?

  • @kimberlykl2009‌ the dairy thing was my only thought too, but wouldn't that make him spit up the formula too? And I guess that would rule out using any of my stash- I can drink up to a gallon of milk a week easy.
  • I'm having the same problem! It comes up all mucousy, too! The nurses in the hospital said if he spits it up and it's curdled it means he got the nutrients out of it first. Well, now he spits it up to fast for that. I'm planning on asking the dr next week. It's driving me crazy!
  • @deanna1313‌ yeah, his comes up mucousy too! I have a pedi app on wed that I'll ask at as well.
  • @elizabe519‌ great! Let me know what they say about it. I've been trying to be patient about all of this, but I'm constantly worrying about if he's getting enough, eating too much and etc.

I am going through the elimination of dairy too. Not bc of spit up though.
Anyhow, our pedi, NP and the LC, told us it takes 3-4 weeks for it to leave your system, not just a few days.

  • I asked the pedi today and she agrees that it is probably the proteins in the breastmilk from all the dairy I consume. The formula that I give him is gentlease which has already partially broken down proteins so he is able to handle it without spitting up. She said I can continue with the formula and reintroduce all the pumped milk I have frozen at a later date when LOs more able to digest it.
  • @elizabe519‌ so does that mean you have to stop breastfeeding all together or are you just gong to limit your dairy intake?
  • I'm stopping because it's just too stressful for both of us and there is just no way I could give up dairy, it makes up way too much of my diet. I'm keeping my freezer stash though and will try to reintroduce him to it at a later time... Some is better than none and hopefully it won't all go to waste.
  • Gotcha! Makes total sense to stop and reintroduce later. I don't blame you at all. I would probably make the same choice if I was in that position.

I have a free sample container of gentlease that I should try. Maybe it will help him.
