Baby Names

WHY is my husband so difficult?!

Hi Ladies,
I need some serious help with baby girl names. I had used the line that "They get your last name, I get final say on the first name," with my husband...and then we found out we're having a girl and he countered with "Yeah, but she'll only have our last name until she gets married..." Ha! Anyways, her middle name will be Mary after DH's two grandmothers.

My favorite name is Lila - and DH is actually semi on board, except that our niece (different last name than us) is named Lily...and he thinks the names are too close. Do you agree?

Here are a list of names that he has vetoed - any suggestions would be MUCH appreciated.
Clare (we both loved this one but DH's first cousin had a baby girl last week and named her Claire, so he says it's now out...I'd be ok with still naming her that, but he's not)
Tessa
Isla
Cora
Mairin
Charlotte (DH likes, but I think it's too popular)
Audra
Regan
Shannon
Vivienne

I wouldn't use the argument that just because they get his last name means that I get the final say. Both parents should like the name. Maybe you should both make a list of names you like and then discuss them.

  • @zimger I agree completely! I was using it as a last resort (and a joke) because we are so far apart on names we like! :-)

I thought it was pretty funny.. Sounds like something I would say! (Jokingly, of course!)
  • I like Tessa best. I don't think Lila is to close too Lily unless they are together constantly, then I can see it getting a little confusing.

  • Lila Mary is a beautiful name. It looks very similar but sounds very different than Lily. It's my favorite on your list (followed closely by Isla)

I agree that Clare is out. Lila and Lily are separate names but Claire/Clare are the same name.

I'm terrible at suggestions so I'm voting Lila Mary!

FWIW, I think Lily and Lila are a little similar, but it would not be a dealbreaker for me, if that was a name DH and I liked.

Here are my thoughts on your other names:

Clare -- will your family be with DH's cousin's family a lot?  If you only see them rarely, you can probably still use this.  If you see them at family gatherings a few times a year, don't use this name.  You still have a bunch of awesome names on the list, though, so no biggie!

    Tessa -- an excellent name!
Isla -- this is not one of my favorites.  Also, people will be confused about pronunciation and your DD will forever be correcting because people will not know whether it's "Iss-lah" or "Eye-luh."
Cora -- Nice!  An under-used classic.
Mairin -- Meh.  Too weird.  It'll get misspelled all the time.
Charlotte (DH likes, but I think it's too popular) -- it's reaching a peak of popularity.  You have better options.
Audra -- A nice name.  I like it, but not as much as Tessa or Cora
Regan -- I want to love this name, but I just think there's something ugly-sounding about it.  You have better choices.
Shannon -- A nicer alternative than Regan, if you're looking for an Irish-sounding name.  May be a little dated, though.  I was born in 1969, and my generation has a ton of girls named Shannon.
Vivienne -- Pretty, but always strikes me as a little frou-frou.  I like Tessa, Cora, and Shannon better.

    DS, born 8/25/04 -- 7th grade
  • I like Lila. It's similar but not too close to Lily. I would go with Lila, personally.

Out of your list I like Tessa Mary and Vivienne Mary

I see. Internet humor is not a strong suit of mine. I still think that it would be a good idea to compare lists.

  • @heartbot - I would LOVE to know! The one and only name he has come up with is Abigail.

Are you planning on having multiple kids? DH & I knew we wanted at least 2, so we made an agreement: with DS he got to pick the final name from our agreed upon "short list", I picked the middle name; this time I get final first name pick, he chooses middle name.

  • My husband was being difficult w names too so I made a list of all the names that I liked or would be okay naming our son there were like 30 haha, then told him to cross off all the ones he didnt like and he crossed off all but 6 then through talking we got those 6 down to 3 and that's where we are at now...but I like the names Lila, Tessa, isla, Audra and regan!
  • I think Lila is different enough than Lily...  Are the girls going to be together a lot or just at holidays/family get togethers? Both parents definitely need to love the name. My mom keeps encouraging me to pick up a stuffed animal and walk around the house with it and saying it's name lol... And I feel your pain, my husband has liked NONE of the names I've suggested. Sigh haha good luck!

  • I really love Lila, but I think it is a bit close. If you would be seeing cousin Lily often I wouldn't use it, but otherwise I don't see a problem.

I also really like Audra from your list.
