Babies: 3 - 6 Months

4 month regression

Hello!
DS just turned 4 months old. He has always been a fantastic sleeper and a very happy baby. The past few evenings/nights have been horrid! He will just start screaming for no reason, he gets himself so worked up, he has a hard time catching his breath. It makes my heart hurt to see him this way! He will only calm down by holding him and bouncing a certain way until he falls asleep, even then, I can't lay him down or he will wake up screaming again. I originally thought growth spurt but I didn't think they lasted so long! I've heard of 4 month regression, is this a real thing and has it happened to any of your babies?
Please share thoughts/opinions!
Thanks!

I think it's happening to my guy right now... We're a bit early but we had a terrible night last night and it took an hour to get him back down (usually, he would fall asleep right after nursing and last night I couldn't even nurse him to sleep!)  From what all the moms (and dads) have said, this 4 month regression is real and it varies from babies to babies on how long it lasts.  Fingers crossed that it doesn't last long with our guys!  GL!

Yep, we are definitely going through that right now... Last night was another horrible night. DH wants to sleep train DS now saying that he's read that it's ok to do so at 4 months. I still think that 6 months is the earliest I would consider it but I'm not sure what to do. Some say that he's waking up so much because he's hungry from not eating enough during the day, others say not to do extra feedings at night because it builds bad habits. I don't know what's best as I feel like if my baby is hungry I feed him. How are you and your guy doing? Any tips from other parents out there? I'd really hate to start sleep training so early and I'm not willing to not feed my hungry baby so any advice would be appreciated. TIA
  • I could not agree more!  I have read the Ferber book along with Baby Wise and got a lot of crap for it.  I would never let DD CIO either.  She's been a great sleeper since she was about a month old and has always been in her crib.

@flcl‌ I'm sorry to hear that things are so difficult for you right now too! Last night went better than the past few, he is being very needy though. I started using or Snugli carrier again simply so I could get things done. He did sleep the night through, it was raining all night here and I've noticed he sleeps better when storming! You'll have numerous people tell you don't do this or do that but it really comes down to what's best for your baby. We always feed our DS when he's hungry! And if he's not satisfied, he gets more. We were scolded for starting him on rice cereal at only 3 months old but he was eating over 40oz of formula a day! And then he started spitting up almost everything he'd eat. He is a BIG boy for his age though. 19 lbs. 10 oz. and around 26". He became a much happier baby.

@lbs2012: thanks for sharing your story.  It sounds like the Ferber book worked great for you guys!  Do you mind me asking, when you first put LO down drowsy but awake, how long did he fuss for?  Did he cry at any point?  Thanks for your help.

@brusch: so glad to hear that you guys had a better night!  My guy's still in a good mood for most the day so at least we have fun together before we get no sleep at night ;)
  • Our little one started this "regression" close to four months old.  For him, it is anytime you lay him down in his bassinet.  He will instantly wake up and usually be screaming.  I used to be able to feed him during the night and lay him back into his bed with no problems.  Not the case anymore.  Unfortunately, we have probably created another bad habit by having in bed with us.  He instantly falls asleep.
  • Have you tried to put a heating pad in the crib while you are rocking him back to sleep so the crib is getting warm while soothing. Take the heating pad out before laying him back down so that way the cool crib won't wake him up.
