are you sleeping at night?

I'm in my second trimester and my doctor said this should be when I'm getting the best sleep. Well that's not happening! I'm waking up 3-4 times a night and although I can get back to sleep in still waking up über tired and not feeling refreshed at all. Are any other mommy to be's in their second trimester experiencing the same problem?

Re: are you sleeping at night?

  • I'm not sleeping well at all, mostly due to congestion and flipping from side to side to avoid lying on my back. I'm thinking of getting one of those Snoogle pregnancy pillows, but I'm holding out a bit because I don't want to accumulate too much stuff that might not be absolutely necessary. I've started to limit the amount of water I drink in the evening so that I don't have to pee as much or at all overnight!

  • I am beyond exhausted. I wake up 4-5 times a night to pee – and that is with limiting my water intake in the evening. Then when I am actually sleeping it is like a ½ sleep… I toss and turn all night trying to get comfortable without laying on my stomach. A pillow between my legs has helped, but it also makes me semi-awake when I have to roll over.

  • I wake up between 1-2 times to pee. Also, one of my cats has been a menace lately and wont' let us sleep. She got her own special room in the office last night.

I was also disappointed because I invested a ton of money into a maternity pillow and I don't think it's helping. Its the U-shaped (goes on both sides of you) to prevent me rolling onto my back,  and every single morning I wake up on my back.
  • Sorry to hear everyone having a hard time sleeping. I was having trouble too during my first trimester. Mainly waking up 1-2 times a night to pee. Thankfully, I'm back to sleeping normal during the 2nd tri. Even so, I still get so tire by the end of each day. Also, I'm a side sleeper favoring my right side. I would fall asleep on my left and always woke up on my right, grr!

  • Yup. I get up to pee about twice a night and DH wakes me when I snore too loud.

  • Sleeping wasn't an issue during 1st tri, granted, my bladder is smaller than average and I've had to pee once or twice every night since I was potty trained. Now that my bump is here, I toss and turn and sleeping on my side makes my arm fall asleep and gives me kinks in my neck. I have a Bump Nest pillow, but I've been avoiding using it because it doesn't leave much room for DH.

My cat has been driving me nuts lately too. Around 3 or 4 am she decides she wants to wake me up for absolutely no reason. She meows and claws at the pillow right next to my face. Last night I kicked her out of the room and got a bit angry with her. DH told me in the morning that I was mean to her. I felt badly, but momma needs her sleep!
  • I think I want to punch your doctor. First tri was rough for me, but I'd give anything to be able to sleep like that again. Now it takes me forever to get comfortable, then I'm up at 3 a.m. to pee and can't get comfortable to go back to sleep before 5 a.m., 30 min before my alarm goes off.

  • Agreed with pp, up usually 2x/night to pee and toss/turn when in bed a lot to get comfortable, change position. I slept much better when I was pregnant with DS and the pregnancy pillow worked wonders. Now, I use the pillow and I still have a lot more trouble getting comfortable. Tell that doctor he's a lying sack.

  • My cat has been sleeping in his own room for months now by force. He's okay with it by now as long as I let him out right at 7:00 for breakfast.

I sleep through the night pretty much, but I am still so tired during the day. I get close to nine hours. What's ideal?

Lmfao I kind of want to punch him too since he said that!

I have a body pillow and I'm a side sleeper but I'm still not sleeping well. I don't drink a ton of water before bed and I'm still peeing 2 or 3 times a night. The other times I'm waking up that aren't pee related is just because I wake up. It's really frustrating... As another poster pointed out it's prepping us for late night feedings.

Sorry you all can't sleep either, but it makes me feel better knowing I'm not alone!
  • I think there should be a mandatory nap time for pregnant women. One of the pregnancy books I'm reading says to not sleep during the day. Not sure what to think about that...

  • Same here...slept much better in my 1st trimester...Now it takes me forever to fall asleep trying to get comfortable with flipping back and forth between sides...Wake up at 4 to pee and then my alarm goes off at 5 with constant snooze hits.. Every time that I mention to my mom that I'm tired she always says that I'm past that stage so why am I tired... hmmm lack of sleep maybe lol

  • I am sleeping pretty good minus getting up 2-3 times to pee.

In the 1st tri I could never go back to sleep after I got up to pee and my MW suggested a supplement of calcium-magnesium mix. It's a miracle worker. I take it about 20 mins before bed and I go back to sleep after I get up to pee.

I have also been using my big noodle body pillow. I am a tummy sleeper and it has been helping with keeping me on my side.

  • I haven't been having to much trouble with sleep, although it doesn't feel like a get enough even though I have been going to bed earlier then I normally do.  I have noticed I get up to pee anywhere between 1-3 but I have no trouble laying back down to go to sleep.  I'm one of those heavy sleepers who pretty sleeps through everything.  I'm trying to enjoy it now cause I'm sure that won't be lasting much longer

  • I slept way better during 1st tri. I keep freaking out about accidentally sleeping on my back, and I keep waking myself up to make sure I'm in the right position. I also need to pee 1,000 times like everyone else, apparently (even though every pregnancy book says "OMG Enjoy the break in 2nd tri from having to pee so much!").

I'm so glad I'm not the only one sleeping awfully in the 2nd tri.  I've always been a light/bad sleeper and now it's even worse.  I go to bed early (like 9:30) and fall asleep no problem, wake up around 11:30 and 2:30/3 to pee, then I usually toss and turn until I get up at 5:30.  I doze off some but I feel like I'm always partially awake.  I sleep better when I sleep in the guest room away from my husband, but I don't want to do that for the next 4.5 months!

People at work are telling me I look tired.  I tell them I'm not sleeping well and am waking up frequently.  They tell me it's good practice for when the baby is here.  Then I want to punch them.

ETA: I got a sleep app that uses your accelerometer to measure when you are asleep and awake based on movement.  I want to try that out and see how much sleep I'm actually getting.

  • I think I have adjusted to the about twice a night pee breaks. Normally, I can get back to sleep as long as my brain does start thinking about things. Sometimes I pee in the dark so I can stay "sleepy"

  • I take unisom to fall asleep.  I sleep till my baby wakes up, usually around 7 or 8.  It has been the most I got in awhile since DS was waking up 45 minutes.

Not sleeping well, no.  I toss and turn and have to adjust positions and it's just hard to get comfortable, so I wake up several times throughout the night.

Yes! I have definitely been freaking out about sleeping on my back lately too. I know it's more of an issue when you're a bit bigger, but I still want to get in the habit now, but I keep waking up on my back. ARGH! DH suggested that I need a maternity pillow, but they're so expensive and I'm doubtful...
  • I'm not sleeping well at all, I can never find a comfortable position. Currently I need three pillows before I can attempt to sleep, then that ends up being a hassle and they end up on the floor or all tangled in the sheets!
  • My issues isn't getting up to pee (well, I do do that some nights, but always pass right back out).  I have this new fun thing where I wake up between 3 and 3:15am and am up for 2-3 hours.  It's not every night (thankfully!) but it's enough to piss me off.  No clue why....

  • I do wake up at least once a night to pee, and sometimes when I change positions or if I'm too hot.  I feel like I'm getting enough sleep - but at the same time, I will sleep til 7:30 every morning, and I need to leave for work at 8:15.  I got up once this week to do some prenatal yoga in the morning and I did feel much better.

I also keep waking up on my back, despite my pregnancy pillow, and it makes my lower back really sore.  Which is really saying something considering we have a Tempur-pedic!

Not quite as well as first trimester... I slept like a log then due to exhaustion. I don't wake up much (my husband wakes me up when he catches me on my back :x ), but I wake up with aches... even with a pillow between my knees.

  • No sleep here! I feel like I go to the bathroom more throughout the night than I do all day. No, I don't drink a lot before bed either. :)

I've also been getting leg cramps at night. I had them with my first too.

I pee on minimum 3 times a night, my back (sciatic nerve) has been hurting for the past week and I wake up thinking of all the things I need to do so not much sleep is happening here!

With DD I feel like this insomnia/constant peeing didn't kick in until 30+ weeks...
  • I'm not sleeping. I could handle peeing 2 times. I think I'm anxious, worried, scared somewhat and this is kid #4!!!! Not enough room for baby!!!! I'm off track. Gonna take some Benedryl tonight an make the husband massage my feet. If that doesn't work I'm gonna break out the lavender bath and body cuz I've been up since 3 am today.

  • I haven't slept good in months! Between DH flopping like a fish outta water 15 times a night and DS constantly trying to get in bed with us, its almost pointless to try to sleep
  • I pulled a muscle in my back a week ago and it keeps me up all night. Before that I was sleeping through the night, getting up once for the bathroom every now and then. I am hoping the pain subsides soon and I can go back to restful nights!

  • I wake up between 1-2 times to pee. Also, one of my cats has been a menace lately and wont' let us sleep. She got her own special room in the office last night.

This. My cat has decided 4:30am is the time for breakfast. Wtf. He's a fan of shredding whatever paper or cardboard he can find, and if there isn't any he will scratch the bedroom door. It's like nails on a chalkboard!
  • I try to sleep instead I go bump in the night....

I would love to get better sleep. getting up to pee doesn't bother me it is when the cats think our bed is a racetrack! after them running across my stomach a month ago sleeping on my back is not an issue. scared me!! I thought someone broke in and jumped me
