Gas Station

I saw an article today about a baby who was abducted when someone stole her mother's car at a gas station. (She was later found okay) Tons of the comments were jumping on the mother for leaving the baby in the car at the gas station. The article didn't say if the car was at the pump or not, but it got me thinking about whether I was doing something wrong. When I am pumping gas, I open two of the car doors and leave DS in the car while I pump. It doesn't take long, I see him and talk to him the whole time, and I open doors to let air in. Am I supposed to get him out while I pump gas? I always thought it was safer for him to be in the car for that.

Re: Gas Station

  • No freaking way would I take DD out of the car at a gas station. How are you supposed to hold a kid and pump gas at the same time? Not to mention the fumes, risk of getting gas on her. Uh uh. Of course, I would also not step away from the car to go inside to pay or anything. Pay at the pump and keep an eye on her through the window while pumping.

  • Ok, I feel better. I thought this was perfectly normal but reading those comments got me wondering.

    Exactly.

  • I never take her out while I pump gas, that's unnecessarily awkward. I take her out to pay if for some reason I can't pay at the pump but it has happened once on a road trip where she was asleep in the car and I needed to pay inside; I used the closest pump to the station, locked the car, paid and ran out never taking my eyes off the car and I made sure there was no line up, otherwise I would have ruined her sleep and taken her out.

  • I can only imagine the terror that mother felt. I usually fill up when I am going to or from work so Fifi isn't with me, but I pay at the pump or stop at a full service station if she's in the car.

  • All I'm thinking is how much I love not having to pump my own gas :) *fist pump*

  • No way would I take them out while pumping gas, two little ones sounds very unsafe. I have done what little red said too, run into pay if I can see the van and it's locked but only if there isn't a line. Plus normally that would be if my oldest was there too he's ten.
