edited June 2014 in September 2014 Moms
Swaddling seems like a lifesaver for most moms.....but there are SO many to choose from. STMs, give us all your secrets....If you could pick ONE swaddler that you just couldn't live without, which would it be?

  • FTM, but all my friends swear by Halo. It's the most common thing people ask if I registered for.

  • I ordered two Miracle Blankets today from the deal @smileygirl18 posted this morning, and I have three of the other kinds on my registry.  STM+... help!

  • Sorry. I didn't swaddle DS.

He would always roll over unto his side and that made me nervous so I let him sleep on his side with his arms free for stability. I could have swaddled him arms out I guess, but I just didn't. Worked for us, was nice not having to break him of the swaddle later on.

So on this subject I'm like a FTM. I'm planning on trying the Swaddle Me because they look simple. I did fold a regular swaddle blanket into a swaddle with DS before ditching the whole idea and I *think* I'd prefer something simpler this time.
  • Obviously I love the Miracle Blanket, it is the only swaddle DS didn't bust out of. I am not a fan of anything that has velcro (Halo) because it is really loud. I try to make MOTN feeding and diapering as dark and quiet as possible so LO doesn't fully wake up. That way they learn the difference between day and night as early as possible. It might sound crazy but it works for us and DS STTN at 3.5 old.

If it take Ian until he's 3.5 to sleep through the night I'm gonna need a different kind of miracle!

  • We used Swaddle Me's at first then switched to A+A blankets when DS wanted an arm out. We transitioned around 3 or 4 months to the Baby Merlin Magic Sleepsuit which is amazing. We kept him in that until around 9 months then switched to halo sleep sacks. Not sure if any of it helped or we were just blessed with good sleeper but DS slept through the night since about 4 or 5 months old.

  • We loved the Swaddle Me's. The Velcro didn't matter because she was only taken out of it when she was awake so who cared. She could bust out but it was one arm so we just let her. This is the kid who still wrangles out of her footy pj's even when we put them on backwards. We saddled unilateral she rolled in her sleep at 4 months.
  • Dear god I don't even know how to swaddle a baby...
No worries. A nurse at the hospital should show you how.

Don't worry. That's what these swaddle aids are for and the nurses at the hospital will help you learn with blankets.

  • We love our swaddle mes with the Velcro.. But I can't say we have tried a bunch of other swaddlers. We used blankets (such and a&a and other normal like receiving blankets) those work, but the Velcro keeps them in better.

  • We just swaddled DD using two regular receiving blankets, kind of like they do at the hospital.  DH got really good at it after awhile.
  • I used receiving blankets and a swaddle me for DD until she was about 4 months. But I did it under her arms bc she didn't like them tucked in.
  • Another HUGE fan of Woombies here. DS1 broke out of 3-4 different ones that we tried and unfortunately we didn't find woombies until DS2. We've had them for both DS2 and DD and you're reminding me to stock up.

  • I used Swaddlemes with DS and never had a problem with them. I am getting a few Woombies to try with this LO, I think I will like them better than the Swaddlemes since they have a zipper.

We had Halo and Swaddlemes to start with and my kid easily broke out of them. We used the Miracle Blanket for way too long (pedi approved, but I think he was about 6 or 7 months) because it was that good. We're going straight to the MB this time.

ETA: We had one MB with my first kid and I always regretted it, but never got around to ordering another one. We'll have 3 for this little girl.

    This!
  • I too am curious about how many was enough for STM. As a FTM, I registered for a 4pk of A+A blankets and a 2pk of Swaddle Me through Target. I figured I would give both a try!

  • Our first was born before a+a existed so we made our own 45x45 blankets from cute baby flannel. Receiving blankets are far too small and are better used for burp cloths and reusable changing pads/covers for public places.
We swaddled until they were done, no breaking of swaddle needed. We used those large blankets for everything. Carseat shade, swaddling, playmat on the floor, nursing cover etc. and they are nice and lightweight as well. Versatile and cheap, long lasting. Swaddling is an easy and valuable skill to learn and the nurses are there to show you how! In that sense if you aren't into making them A&a will accomplish the same thing.
I have no experience with the large variety of swaddle items, didn't even know they existed really

baby #3 arrived in September 2014...cannot get ticker to work no matter what I try!

  • I'm not an STM but I voted for a+a anyway because so so many of my friends have recommended them and my mom said she wished they were around for us as babies.

  • I bought a couple of the miracle blankets off Smiley's deal yesterday (thanks for the recommendation!) and I've registered for some a+a blankets. It's so warm down here, I can't imagine needing to use a flannel or thicker material than the muslin very often. My mom always showed me how to swaddle my dolls growing up, so I don't have an issue with that skill, but the a+a blankets are really nice for everything from swaddling to drool blotting, to security blanket cuddling, etc. so they'll last past the swaddling stage. My mom-friends love them.

  • DD hated being swaddled......DS LOVED it.  I would only buy a few until you know for sure the baby wants to be swaddled.
  • I voted but I really only tried and liked swaddle me.  Worked for DS, he did work his arms out of it every now and again but he slept good with them.

  • When he was first born I thought "DS hates being swaddled" so I suffered through 6 weeks of absolutely no sleep. Out of desperation I put him in the Miracle Blanket on Christmas eve and he slept like a rock. It was a Christmas miracle! Turns out he was beating himself up at night with his arms out like I "thought he liked".  Never looked back. He stayed in that thing until he grew out of it/rolled over.

I tried the Woombie once but it looked like a straight up straight jacket and kind of freaked me out.  I might give it another go this time though.

We used Swaddle Mes and loved them - DD could wiggle her little arms out of every other kind of swaddle we tried.  Once she started rolling over, we swaddled her with her arms out and she liked that a lot, too.

I do recommend getting the A+A swaddles, though, because they make fabulous multipurpose blankets.  They're lightweight and a lot bigger than regular receiving blankets.  We used them all the time.

  • Honestly I swaddled in receiving blankets. Mine were so tiny anything worked. I picked up a swaddle me for $5 (brand new) at a mom 2 mom that I'm going to try this time. I love halo sleep sacks so I imagine the halo swaddlers will working good too.

  • The nice thing about the woombie is that the fabric is pretty stretchy, so she could move inside it, but not get out. DD's was orange so we called her our baby carrot when she was in it. :)
that is ADORABLE. I may have to buy an orange one now and use it as a secondary purpose and make her a carrot for halloween.

    She is cuuuuuuuute!

I was starting to lean toward the woombie with the hip safety things already brought up by other PPs, but you have definitely tipped the scales with that cuteness!
  • My favorites were A&A blankets and Swaddle Me. No matter what we used she found a way to wiggle her arms out. We have 4 A&A blankets and about 5 swaddle mes. We swaddled her until she was 5 months old.

  • DD absolutely hated to be swaddled. I've got a few muslin and swaddle me's on hand for this LO.
  • I swaddled my son with receiving blankets as that was the only option 13 years ago. My nieces use woombies and my sister loves them. They r super stretchy and come in cute prints.
  • I love the Halo sleep sacks (swaddlers all the way up to the older sleep sacks). I got a variety of swaddlers at my shower, so I will try those out too and see if I find any new favorites. I even got a few Garanimals ones which I am curious to see if they work.

Also...for clarity, I am a FTM. I have experience from working in an infant/toddler classroom. I realized after I typed the first part that I sounded like I had a shower after knowing what swaddlers I liked the functionality of (potentially a STM+). Lol.
