November 2014 Moms

A/S-So that's our last look??

Had our a/s yesterday and it was so exciting to see LO again.

Question, though, was that the last ultrasound look we'll have at LO until they arrive? (I know some circumstances require more, but just in general). I liked having the 1st tri and this to know everything was going ok. I'm really sad I won't see baby again until November!

Re: A/S-So that's our last look??

  • Probably not the last one.  I'm no doctor, but I believe they continue to "check in on things" throughout the pregnancy.  My friend just got one at 28 weeks and I know SIL got a few right toward the end to make sure everything was progressing properly.

  • I've been fortunate enough to have an ultrasound at every appointment. I have another appointment with my OB tomorrow, I am curious to see if they will do an u/s as well. As a FTM I am not sure though. Would love to hear what the STM+ have to say.
This....I have an OB appt Friday and we have had an untrasound at every visit so far. A/S with the specialist on July9.  Guess it depends on your doctor.  No harm in asking them.

  • Agree with pp, depends on practice and circumstance but this will be the last routine one for me. I opted for a 3D with DS and then we had one about 36 weeks because they weren't sure if he was head down. The amount of strong movement you begin to feel helps to know that everything is ok.

  • I was told it was my last one. We are going to do the optional 3D/4D ultrasound in September though to take a peek at her :)

  • Different for everyone.  The a/s is the only one I get from my OB.  I've had multiple because I was seeing an RE through 13 weeks with both of my pregnancies and they do them routinely, but otherwise it would be that one and only at 20 weeks.  My insurance would cover more, my OB just doesn't find them necessary unless there's problems.

  • Yep. Usually 20 weeks is the last one, unless you have complications where they need to monitor baby more.

gah! I found someone who has to wait until 22 weeks for their anatomy scan too!?!?!? LOL Hallelujah I was starting to avoid the forums b/c of all the A/S posts and feeling so green with envy! lol

The office I go to said they regularly do three.  Had one for dating, my anatomy next week, and then one later sometime after 30 weeks.  Supposedly they do also 4D at this last regular one, and they'll burn a copy if I bring the disk.  Had never heard of that before!
  • Sometimes they will do them right at the end to check and make sure everything is in position and the cord isn't wrapped around the neck/torso. But I only know a couple people who had that done, so I don't know how common it is.

With my son, the anatomy scan was the last ultrasound I had. and I had a dating ultrasound right away because my cycles are way funky.
  • I got a dating U/S the A/S and will have another at 28 weeks to check on growth. I am an AMA patient so OB may have more done depending on how things are going.

  • I think that, in general, as long as they can see everything they wanted to see and there's no other concern about baby it's the last one.

Unless you have problems, as other PPs mentioned, it's the last. I had a low-lying placenta at the a/s so my OB wanted one at around 28 weeks to make sure everything was ok. My insurance covers 2 unless more are needed (coded "medically necessary").
  • I know where I am from our hospital gives free 28-32 week 3D U/S so I'm looking forward to that. But normally yes that would be the last one.

I wish doctors would wise up and make a third trimester ultrasound standard. I think they could catch a lot of things. As for me I'm having an ultrasound done weekly after 32 weeks.
@aragosta -- They could catch a lot of things....  like what?

(The only thing I might be curious about would be if my baby was wrapped in the cord...  But really, every thing could look fine at 39 weeks...  but then the baby could start getting tangled the day you deliver.)
