Pitifully stupid question

I am nearly convinced the answer is no, but...

Can the baby feel my pain? Pain incidental to mine? I have pressure in my abdomen, probably from gas, it feels really tight and uncomfortable and I wonder if it's the same at all for baby.

Reading this back I'm like YOURE SO SILLY, F. NO, but then I think about how other physical (and mental) stress isn't good for baby..... I just hope s/he's cozy in there always.

I get that the baby is suspended in a universe of amniotic fluid, but come on, there's limited space in my belly.

Tbh...idk. I DO know that I had a lot of pressure in my lower abdomen as well. It was really uncomfortable moving, walking, standing up, etc...everything! We went for our 20wk A/S & they told us he was breech which at this point doesn't mean anything really because he has plenty of room to move but I'm assuming he's still that way and enjoying it bc I still feel lots of pressure :/

  • I am going to say no as well. I have had lots of lower abdomen pressure for the last 10 weeks or so and baby is fine. I have had 3 ultrasounds in that time frame and baby is dancing and kicking.

When your stressed your body releases a chemical. It's that chemical reaction that is harmful to the baby.

As a FTM myself, I don't think any question is silly. Ask away, that is what the board if for :) we have lots of Amazing STM to help us through this.

  • I think the pressure and cramping isn't felt by the baby, and depending on it, the baby's movement or position can be causing some of that. Your feeling of pain comes from your nerves, which are seperate from the baby's. Bloating and gas are experienced from outside of the womb, so it shouldn't really have any effect on them, at least certainly not at this stage.

It isn't a silly question. It's something a lot of people wonder about I think.
  • FTM too - so I don't really know but I would generally agree with PP.

@kyliedaniellexx - So you mean my road rage isn't bad for the baby? I keep apologizing to him for it - "I'm sorry, honey, people are not driving safely and it makes Mama yell!"
Hehehe, this made me laugh.  I can get pretty road ragey and it makes me cuss like a sailor sometimes...something I'm trying to do less.  I always tell the baby "don't talk like mommy does, it's not nice".  Honestly though, if people weren't so stupid when driving I wouldn't have to go all crazy hormonal at them.  (Jokingnotjoking font)  :D

@lil_shocker‌ I was thinking that it's painful for me, so inflammation or gas bubbles would be pushing on the womb making it tight in there for baby. It doesn't make any spatial sense to me.

@kyliedaniellexx‌ and I've been told by my doctor that stress and anxiety are not helpful to pregnancy, especially if it's causing heart palpitations or something, duh. Sometimes I feel like a crystal loving gypsy, believing that good energy is essential to this developing baby.

  • i have chronic, excessive migraines (15/mo not pregnant-20+/mo while pregnant). both my neuro's and my ob have stressed that i am to take my meds at the onset. the pain that comes along with a migraine, when in excess, is what they don't want because it puts stress on the baby, and they really don't want that when it can be avoided. it's how they've determined that my class C med needs to be taken-the benefit of reducing the stress put on my body and baby are far better than trying to tough it out (which doesn't actually work out since they won't go away without meds, but i digress). so, chronic pain can lead to stress on the baby. stress from a bad day at work, meh, not quite the same. the baby doesn't feel the pain that you're feeling, but could be stressed from the pain that you're body is working hard to resolve. case in point: my failed induction with DS was a result of me getting sick with some stomach bug. i was so weak, dehydrated, etc. that it was making him lethargic. he was moving, breathing, etc, but he wasn't responding to the monitors like the wanted, even though they fed me juice, pop, snacks, and buzzed my belly with the wand. they induced because i was 35w6d and sick, which was causing DS to react much the same way since my body was having a hard time battling the illness and take care of him at the same time. the induction ultimately failed, and i was starting to get better by the time we called off the induction (my body wasn't responding well to the pit and DS was too high to have my water broken) and as a result DS was looking better on the monitors.

ssstephanie214 - as far as the gas pushing on the womb, I think of it as something floating around inside a water balloon.  Putting pressure on the outside of the balloon doesn't do anything to the object floating around inside.  The baby is uber-protected in there!

But..... Force/area = pressure? I did pretty well in 9th grade physics. seems like pushing on the outside would increase pressure on the inside, unless it was displaced. maybe i'm thinking too hard about this. maybe i am going to get one of @carcrashheart 's horrible sounding migraines.

i'm sorry you and your baby have to deal with that! does the medicine make them less frequent?
