Pumping ?

So my DH is off today and gave my LO a bottle so I could run some errands. I pumped in place of the missed feeding and got just a bit over 1.5 ounces on one side as thats how I nurse.

My LO nurses pretty frequent during the day, every 2 to maybe 2.5 hours and is 13 weeks. I've never seemed to have supply issues and I know baby empties the boob diff than the pump but what can I assume my baby is actually getting at a feeding then?

Re: Pumping ?

  • agree with @casey78 that you should be pumping both sides at once, assuming you have a double pump. it's better to get the stimulation from both sides to help let down. if you don't have a double pump, i would still pump both sides. baby is much more efficient than the pump, as well, so she would get more milk than you are pumping. i would also recommend doing something distracting (for instance, reading or watching tv), while pumping, so you can relax more and aren't tense about how much you're pumping. it is a bit of a learned skill.

  • Thanks ladies :-) And I def use the kellymom calculator to help know how much milk to give in his nightly bottle.

I'm not new to pumping as I pump every night when he gets his normal night time bottle/for the longer stretch of sleep from my LO. But I don't pump too often otherwise. It's honestly easier to just nurse my guy. I'll pump both sides next time and see how that goes. I guess I was surprised to see such a small amount.
