Pack 'n Play

So, I'm browsing here:

https://www.target.com/s?searchTerm=pack+n+play+playard&category=0|All|matchallpartial|all+categories&kwr=y&lnk=snav_rd_pack_n_play&kwr=y&orginalSearchTerm=pack+'n+play

I was going to go for the Pack 'n Play Playyard with Newborn Napper (mostly so we have that downstairs and don't have to have the baby sleeping upstairs in the crib during the day away from us). Am I missing something with these other models? Would a cheaper model work just as well?

We got the most basic model and DD slept in it in our room for 7 months.  I don't really see the point of the changing areas or newborn nappers.  Your newborn can still nap in the PNP, they'll just be on the "bassinet" (the raised part that covers the whole PNP) until they get too big for it.  I don't imagine you can use those newborn nappers for more than a hot minute.

ETA: I guess the napper thing is sort of reclined?  If that is what you are looking for, I'd get a bouncer or rock n play or swing because you are probably going to want something like that anyway and it is a lot more portable and takes up less space.
  • Loading the player...
  • I have heard from fiends that the nappers and changing areas are useless.  I registered for the 4moms Breeze due to the ease of opening and closing.

  • Oooh. Good point. I do have a bouncer (it doesn't really bounce or swing, it has a "vibrate button") thinger that is basically the same. My friend passed that on to me, so the newborn napper portion is proabably not necessary at ALL then. This is why you people are here. To help me work through these things when my brain is mush.

  • Well, the newborn napper is pointless to me, the bassinet part is just fine.

But the changing table....DH and I used that ALL THE TIME when DD was small.  We didn't change her on the floor until she was older and the changing table was handy for downstairs because her room was upstairs and that had the changing pad in it.  So rather than go up and down, or do it on the floor, we used the PnP.  I loved it!

  • I registered for this same PnP. I was under the impression that the newborn napper WAS the bassinet. Shoot, am I wrong? I literally know nothing about baby stuff. :-S

    No, they aren't.

The bassinet is the raised bottom (I think all PnPs have that), and the newborn napper is more like the seat of a swing, reclined and cushioned.

I just figured that out, like NOW.

I have a swing/bouncer/vibrating chair thinger, so I'm thinking about just getting the one with the changer, if not just the bare bones model.

  • Great thread, ladies. We registered for a PnP primarily to be used downstairs as a nap/play area as well as for traveling to our parents houses. That said, the area next to my side of the bed is pretty narrow and I don't think we'll be able to get the PnP in there. So I'm hoping that the RnP will be the nighttime sleep solution for those first weeks.

  • We have a version like the graco PNP newborn napper LX. I hated the changing table because it was angled strange so it never was flat. If you put the baby in they rolled to one side. I never could figure out why because none of the pieces were bent.  As for the napper, in the pictures it always looks like its inclined but its not. Its flat. If anyone cares I can get a picture of ours so you can see what it actually looks like.

However the napper part was used for a very long time in our house. we used it in the PNP, on the floor for tummy time or just playing, and we used it in the crib for a while because I could prop it up and it had a padded metal frame that kept baby from rolling all over. Which was important when we needed him to stay upright after eating due to reflux. He hated the swing and vibrating chair until about 5 months so we got a lot of use out of the napper part.

  • I just registered for the Pack 'n Play On the Go. The book Baby Bargains really sold me on it. It said that a lot of those extra features are pretty useless. We are going to keep it downstairs for awhile but then we plan on using it for yearly beach vacations (rather than asking the hotel for a crib). It has great ratings too!

  • I registered (and already recieved, thanks to my gernerous BIL & SIL!) the PNP with the freestanding Cuddle Cove. It's detachable and has a vibrate feature, much like the bouncer. On the flip side, I didn't register for a bouncer since I can take the Cuddle Cove anywhere in the house with me. The issue I had with the Newborn Nappers in the PNP is they have to stay attached to the PNP and I wanted something with more mobility. Also, I like that when the CC is not being used I can just put it back in the PNP and it doesn't take up any valuable floor space. If I was getting a separate bouncer or considering a Rock 'n Play, I'd just go with a bare bones PNP. I did register for a Mamaroo, but I see that as a soothing/entertainment gadget, not a place for sleeping.

  • Loved the changer.. we didn't have a real, official changer and used it until he outgrew it. Debating. Prob wont even use it this time. I think my 2yo will just have to learn not to mess with his brother at diaper time. Babysat a 6wk old in January and he wanted to pick her up every time I put her down. Cute but unsafe. We only used the pnp at the grandparents after about 8months

  • @starla487 the PNP mattress that goes on the bottom is the same thing that goes on the top for the bassinet. So the sheets will fit.
  • I have the PnP with the changer- we used it all the time.  He spent a little more to get one that had a zipper for access underneath to use as storage.  We were living in MIL's basement and needed to conserve space.  We looked at ones with the napper, but it didn't seem sturdy on the models we checked out.  The main bed part reclined in ours, anyway, so the napper wasn't necessary.

  • I have nothing to add (I'll be a FTM) this was so helpful! Thank you for starting this thread!
Me: 33 - PCOS & Hypothyroidism DH: 35 - SA is good Married since 2010 (together since 2006) TTC since June 2009 (we knew we would have issues and wanted family right away after we got married). No pregnancies yet. May 2013 - started first round of Chlomid & ovidrel cycle.
  • I have used lots of different pnp brands and the only thing I use is the bassinet. The newborn napper didn't feel sturdy and we were afraid my ds would roll under the changer so we took it off immediately. It was also too small to actually use.

As far as brands, I have found graco to be the easiest to set up and take down. They are also narrow enough to fit thru doors. Even flo is a close second and you can get them at wal mart for about $50. Chicco is very difficult to set up and take down. It doesn't fit thru doorways. The bottom is softer than other brands I have used and you can wash it which is really nice! Costco brand is ok. It is more difficult to take down and store. I had to have my h help me get it in the carrying case. Ingenuity has a pack n play that is completely washable. I haven't tried to set it up of break it down but I have my eye on it. I had an ingenuity bouncer and I loved it!

Side note, don't get target brand pnp sheets. They don't fit well and make the bottom part fold up a little. Total waste of money!
  • Ok, So UPDATE. This is where I'm at, ladies.

I think I'm sold on the changer part....but NOT the napper. It's so close to the little seat/bouncer we have already, and people are saying it didn't seem sturdy....so....

    Sound like a good decision?

I'm a little late to the game here but I think so. The Graco PnP never seemed sturdy to me when I checked it out in the store. Have you looked at the Chicco lullabys? To me those seemed a lot sturdier than the Graco ones - it might be more expensive though depending on the Graco model you are looking at.

Something else you want to consider is how easy it is to clean the changer. That was actually what sold me on the Chicco vs. the Graco. The Chicco's changing pad is all plastic and easy to wipe down whereas the Graco one was made of cloth and spot clean only. After my newborn peeded and pooped on his changing table several times, I was grateful that we got the plastic one. (I bought mine 2 years ago so they might have made updates to the model since then - just look for a changing pad that is easy to clean).

Also my personal opinion is that unless your baby has reflux, you should get them used to sleeping on a flat surface (like the bassinet portion of the PnP) so that it's easy to transition them to the flat surface of a crib later. We had no issues transitioning DS1 to his crib at 5 months because he was used to sleeping on the flat surface of his PnP bassinet.

  • Curious whether the changer that comes with these PnP's can be used on other surfaces, or just attached to the PnP? The description of the product says the changing station is removable... is that just for cleaning purposes or would I be able to put it on a dresser or countertop? I'm just concerned LO will quickly outgrow the weight limit of being changed in the PnP, and it would be nice if the changer can be transferred to other surfaces without me needing to buy a new/separate changing pad.

The changer that came with my PnP is removable but I wouldn't want to use it on another surface because it's pretty thin and may not lie flat. The weight limit of my changer was 25lbs which your baby is unlikely to outgrow by 1 year (unless you have a bigger baby). I would be more concerned about them outgrowing the length of the changer.

  • Does anyone know if the napper can be taken out of the PnP and just put on the floor? Or does it have to be utilized while attached to the PnP?

Also, @SPurp13, I was browsing on Amazon and found a Pack n Play model that has a reversible napper/changer. It's a bit cheaper than the one that comes with a separate napper and changer, and the reviews seem pretty favorable. Just thought I'd share :)

That's the exact model I played with in the store 2 years ago and found to be very flimsy. The mechanism to flip it was hard to work and it seemed really shaky - this was 2 years ago though so they could have made it more sturdy by now.

  • I don't think you need either the changer or the napper. For DD we had the regular one and so do my in laws. We basically set up a portable changing station on our couch using a portable changing pad for the first month or so. We had a bin that we kept in the living room and would take everything out of.

  • This is a really good thread because this whole PnP thing has me so confused. At first I put the one in the OP on my registry because it was part of the design set that matched the stroller/carseat, swing, high chair, etc. But now after more research I feel like all those bells and whistles aren't necessary. I'm not planning on getting a bassinet, we'll likely just use the PnP in our room the first few months. I'm also not planning on getting a changing table, which is why I thought the changer attachment was a good idea, but I mostly just see myself changing him on the floor or couch, like @JessAnnJ mentioned. If I need to change him on an elevated surface, I suppose I could just get a changing pad and do it on the dresser. I feel bad putting something so expensive on my registry when there are already a lot of other expensive things...
  • @noonandj04‌ we do have a changing pad in the nursery that we have on top of the dresser and that is where we always change DD now. When she was floppy and new and I was sore I just didn't like walking up and down the stairs as much so we had the PNP for her to sleep in and changed her on the couch.

That's the one I settled on! Best of both worlds. PROBABLY won't use the napper. But if I want to try it, there it is.

  • I have 2 levels in my house as well and I loved having my pack n play on the main floor.  especially since I had a c section, less stair walking in the beginning.  I purchased the napper and changing table.  I used them both for the first 3 months, then just the changing table for the first 6 months. Then the pack n play for travel, or other kids staying over and now just to contain her for a few while i use the bathroom.

I will do the same set up with this new one arriving, since now I will have less time running upstairs with 2 kids to change the newborns diaper. I did cloth diapers so having extra space on the side worked so i wouldn't have to bend over again a lot in the beginning.

Again best advice given to me was if you don't get it as a gift, wait till the baby gets here and see if you really need it, then buy it.
