NBR - Bread makers

I've been thinking About buying a breadmaker. Does anyone have one? What kind? Do you actually use it? Do you like it? Is it simple?

I ask because they seem to be pretty pricey - if I'm going to shell out $200-300 I want to make sure it's worth it.

Thanks in advance!

I have a hand me down bread maker (not sure of the brand at the moment) but I really like it. My father bought it years ago so it's an old model anyway. It's simple to use but we do get an occasional "flop" that something goes wrong with the recipe (probably has to do with "human error" haha). Cost per loaf is so much cheaper than buying bread so eventually you will recoup the money. Consider getting a second hand one or borrow one for a few weeks from someone you know to see how you like it. We don't use it that much primarily bc we have really limited counter space so that is a drawback but there is nothing like the aroma of a freshly baked loaf of bread. Plus it is fun to experiment with different recipes and you know that there are no preservatives since you're in control of the recipe.

  • I had one for a long time but got rid of it a few years ago because our new kitchen doesn't have much storage or counter space. We only used it sporadically because DH doesn't eat much bread and half of each loaf would get wasted because it's only good for a couple of days. Maybe when DD is a little bigger and eating more, Id consider getting one again.

  • My parents had one but hardly ever used it as it's hard to slice it thin enough to make sandwiches or all the recipes they tried were.

  • I have one and love it. However, we didn't buy it. It was given to us by my Aunt. I use it a few times a month. I make my own pizza dough in it and bread once in awhile. Like PP said I haven't figured out how to make sandwich bread so I make bread to go along with soup or cinnamon raisin is our favorite.

Mine also makes jam but I haven't tried that yet. I'm waiting for strawberries to come in season and then I'm going to try it out.
  • I have a Breadman brand and love it. I used it today. In the winter I use it 2-3 times a week. I prefer to use the dough setting and make buns most of the time but do use it to bake raisin bread, whole wheat and rye bread. I also use it to make pitas and cinnamon buns :) I don't have a lot of counter space either but it's worth it for us. Bread here is $2-$3 per loaf and it's less than a $1 a loaf even to make 12 grain. A plain white loaf costs around $0.50 a loaf.
  • I don't know if you ever decided or not, but in case you were on the fence, I'd recommend checking craigslist.  We got ours for $5, and we love it.  Good luck! :-)
  • I believe I found this recipe on the bump, anyway I wouldn't get a breadmaker until you try this, which does not require one:

I've made cranberry, orange pecan  as well as  rosemary, garlic, cheese.  Both are delicious but I prefer the sweet one.
  • Sounds delicious!  I may need to get a dutch oven just for this recipe! :-)

I don't have one, I just use a stainless steel pot with stainless steel handle and lid.  Works like a charm!
