Bra Discussion

FTM here and I am looking at things that I will need to purchase soon which mostly has to do with nursing. Pre-pregnancy I was a 38 C and actually I still am. I've not had to buy new bras at all. I'm looking at nursing bras now and I am unsure what size to buy. I've heard that about 3 days after pregnancy my boobs will get huge (my mom and aunt have both said that) so I am wondering if I should buy my current size or size up? Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks!

I bought and LOVE a Bravado Body Silk Seamless Nursing Bra about 2 months ago. I was a 34DD BEFORE pregnancy and have grown quite a bit already. This bra has no underwire, which I was skeptical about, but it's super comfy and supportive. It stretches really well. I got a size large (was a 40E at the time of purchase) and I've grown some and am still on the tightest setting. I have no doubt that this bra will grow with me when my milk comes in. Worth every penny.

  • @dogperson11‌ thanks for the recommendation! I have been searching for a nursing bra, tried some on at motherhood that I did not like at all. This looks like it might be a winner

  • Thanks ladies! I was actually on Target's website when I decided to ask the question. I am a little leary of no underwire but from what I thought and what I've read here it may be the best bet for comfort for a little while.

This bra looks amazing! Once I figure out what I need (thinking of doing the cheap target bra first, as suggested above) I will look more into it! Thanks for the link :)
  • I second the Bravado Body Silk nursing bra. I've been wearing it since second tri. I've gone from a 32 C/D to a 34 DD already and it still fits well (size medium).

  • Ok now that I have figured out what I plan on doing for a bra, what are some suggestions for tops? I was looking at tops that you can move to the side but with the way nursing bras flip down it seems like there is a lot of fabric that could get in the way. Is it just easier to raise your shirt or do you recommend buying a couple of tops specific to nursing? Also V-neck vs. Cowlneck, any thoughts?

Sorry for all of the questions, I just don't want to waste money and as I've mentioned in my original post, I've never done this before. Thanks!

  • I have always been pretty flat chested.. (Don't fill an A) and I have gone up to almost a B, but my size A bras still fit me thus far.. So I'm really unsure what to buy size wise..
  • @heightdeprived - Amazon has a free return policy on almost all of the Bravado bras.
  • I would second the recommendation of getting a few cheap soft bras to get you through the early days. Then you'll know what size you are and you can order a few nicer ones then. Amazon will still be there after you give birth, as will the mall.

@jillhorner87, I'm also pretty small chested. Around the house, I wore a lot of nursing tanks and just shoved nursing pads into the shelf bra. I didn't worry about bras at all except for going out. I got a few Gap pregnancy support camis that I continued to wear while nursing and a few random other ones from Zulily/JCPenney/Old Navy. I've heard good things about the Target nursing tanks too.
  • @DanRae801, when I was going out, I preferred having a nursing tank and a regular shirt. Pull the shirt up, unbuckle the tank and bra, then feed your baby. That way both my "top boob" and flabby tummy were covered up. If you're using a nursing cover (DD hated those) or aren't worried about top boob, I liked v-neck shirts where I could just pop a boob out the neck hole and nurse. I wore a lot of cheap t-shirts for a while so stretching out the neck wasn't a big deal.
  • @laurelcharles‌ pretty much the same as you! No change at all in my bras thus far. So who knows what will happen after birth!

  • @laurelcharles at least you've had to move the clip and straps...I've needed to do nothing!

Thanks @shevaCC I never thought of the tanks because I don't really like layering (esp in Summer months) but that sounds pretty simple.

I love the LaMaze nursing bras; wear them now every day, and will continue after the birth.

I would recommend getting just a few flexible items now (a couple nursing tanks and LaMaze bras were all I started with last time), then getting measured a week or so after the birth.

  • My mom has been a bra specialist for years and has warned me about under wires in bras while nursing, I guess they can cause several problems
  • Anyone know a good online source for big girl bras?  I'm about a 46 E right now and can't find nursing bras anywhere!

@allygirl520 try barenecessities.com.  I just ordered a 38H from there last night, and that is also where I got all of my nursing bras for my first DD.

Also - with the exception of the first couple of months (when I was home on leave and my milk supply was evening out) I wore underwire nursing bras to work every day for the 14 months I nursed DD.  Never had a problem.  Just wanted to say that underwire doesn't always cause problems.  There is no way with my G/H size boobs I could go without the underwire in my professional work clothes.

  • In our breastfeeding class they told us NOT to buy underwire bras for nursing as they WILL affect your milk!
  • I wore underwire bras exclusively last time and breastfed for a year with no problems. I think there's a bit of exaggeration going on there.

Ours did not say this and I already bought 2 with underwire. I hope this isn't true, because I still plan to wear the underwire ones when out and about.

Not true.  It bothers me how much misinformation is out there sometimes, even by supposedly the "experts." I was fine and all of my friends were fine with underwire.  I'm sure it's possible that it can affect some women, but the use of scare tactics is stupid.  Try it out.  If you are ok, then great, if it gives you a problem, then reevaluate.

One of my friends went to a breastfeeding class this week and that LC told her that the Affordable Care Act only provides USED breastpumps, and that she should buy her own because used ones are not safe.  First of all it's not true (I know all insurance companies are different, but call and ask yours).  And do you really think that insurance companies would be handing out unsafe, used (the LC said open systems) for women to use? I think now.

  • I have a Lamaze bra that I bought when DS was around one because I was still nursing and I love it. My other bras were worn out at that point, but they were all underwire and I had no issues with milk production. I also have a soft night time nursing bra from motherhood maternity that is amazingly comfortable.

  • My bravado silk seamless bra just arrived in the mail (Ordered from amazon). It fits wonderfully, thanks to all who recommended it! Got a large, currently at a 38DD and still leaves room to grow if needed. Hoping these bad boys won't grow anymore though... I look at my old bras with longing right now :(

  • I just ordered 2 of the Target camis and one of the Bravados from Amazon.  Can't wait to try all of them!

At my breastfeeding class last night, the LC didn't have a problem with underwires, she just said to make sure that they don't dig in under your arms.  Evidently there are nursing bras specifically designed with a wider underwire to decrease the risk of blocking ducts, but obviously breasts vary, and some women can wear whatever they want and some will need to be more careful.
