Pregnant after a Loss

did your OB/Midwife put you on progesterone?

Hi,

I am currently 4w( tested positive yesterday). I had a miscarriage in February at about 5-6w. I called my midwife's office and they said they don't follow a different protocol for someone with my miscarriage history. Interested in stories of others who have experience the same thing. Did you provider put you on progesterone?

Re: did your OB/Midwife put you on progesterone?

  • I have been on progesterone for all 4 pregnancies, but is has nothing to do with my loss history. I have a history of very low progesterone and struggle to get it above 10, even while pregnant. If you are concerned just ask to have your progesterone level checked. Most doctors like to see it above a 15-20 in early pregnancy (everyone follows slightly different protocols).

I hope you are able to get more answers from your midwife.

Oh, and most doctors don't follow different protocols for a pregnancy after loss unless there was a specific reason for the loss.

  • I was put on progesterone supps for this pregnancy, but I had two losses prior. I actually asked my doc about going on them after I had my second loss. I had no testing done for low prog, so medically she didn't see a reason for them, but prescribed them to me anyway for peace of mind. Kind of like a "they might not help, but they can't hurt, so why not?" thing. If you really think it would help ease your mind, perhaps you can ask your doctor outright for them?
  • I was working with an RE and was put on progesterone 4 days after ovulation up until test day and then continued on it when I got my BFP. With my last pregnancy I had very low progesterone so they tested my levels twice this time and I will stay on the suppositories until 12 weeks.

After my second loss in a row, my OB put me in progesterone as soon as I got the positive. He didn't wait for blood test or anything. He sent the prescription straight to my nearest pharmacy and I started taking it that same afternoon.  I've never been before in progesterone, but after seeing all the trouble he went trough to make me have the pills asap, I thought the progesterone was a big deal. Not sure though, but this pregnancy went well (touch wood) and I want to think the medication played a big part on it :) Good luck!

  • Similar to other posters I had low progesterone with DD so had blood tests and monitoring until 2t and was on progesterone. This time the levels are good but are fluctuating a lot so I'm on Prometrium again this pregnancy and doing serial levels.

  • I had a loss in January, and when I found out I was pregnant a few months later I had blood work done and my progesterone was really low so they put me on progesterone supps.
  • I had two losses and without doing any testing my OB put me on progesterone as a can't hurt type of thing. I'm now 12 weeks and 4 days and am coming off of them because my LO is doing great.
  • My OB out me on progesterone as a precaution after 2 consecutive losses and a short luteal phase. I assumed that they would check my progesterone levels, but the possible LP defect was enough for her. I'm on 50 mg suppositories until 16 weeks.
  • My OB put me on progesterone supps and baby aspirin as soon as my pregnancy was confirmed. I asked why it was needed (what my levels were) and the receptionist told me it is standard protocol for all AL'ers at this office.

  • I think a lot of PPs have said what I was going to say, but I am only on them because I have been under the care of an RE since April.  He will keep me on them through 10 weeks, and the levels are tested weekly. It can never hurt to ask, if you are curious about it.

  • After my first loss, when I became pregnant again, there was not any special procedure. M/C is unfortunately fairly common. But after two in a row, they started doing more testing, and I have to see them sooner than the normal 8 weeks.

I started progesterone after the second loss. My levels were low in the past. It's icky, but I'll do anything that might help.

With my 1st two pregnancies (both losses), I was not immediately placed on progesterone-with my 1st, my levels were fine. With my 2nd, I had low progesterone from the get go (ectopic), so I was put on progesterone (levels were never above 10). My 3rd and 4th pregnancy were with an RE who puts all patients on progesterone once pregnancy is confirmed. I had levels checked weekly, stopped testing and progesterone at 10 weeks and all has been fine. Pretty sure I was just given it as a "can't hurt" type of deal.

  • After my first loss my doctor at the time did nothing differently for my second, which also ended in a loss. I switched doctors and was put on progesterone for my third pregnancy because I have a type of MTHFR that causes low progesterone and folic acid. We were blessed with our rainbow girl 9 months later. This pregnancy (fourth) I was also on progesterone and things have been going well so far.
