Trying to be calm

edited June 2014 in July 2012 Moms
Went to the doc yesterday for belly pain. The nurse came in and got all my info, told me my urine looked good and clear, preg test negative, all that jazz. No surprises there.
OB came in and was really concerned about the pain, which surprised me. She said she wanted to check my paragard placement and to get undressed. She left and I got myself all arranged. She came back with a weird look on her face. She tells me I'M PREGNANT. She looked at my test again and it's faintly positive.

I just looked at her in confusion while she kind of rubbed my arm. I asked her how that was possible, and she told me she needed to check the IUD. Next shock: she couldn't find it.

They sent me for a vaginal ultrasound to check for ectopic, but couldn't see anything at all. They ran blood work to check my hormone levels and I just got those back. 27...so I'm maybe 3-4 weeks.

The current working theory is that the IUD made its merry way through my uterus and into my abdominal cavity, and is now causing pain. Unless the pain becomes severe, I develop infection, or can't eat, it isn't considered an emergency. They usually find them with X-ray, but since I'm pregnant that's not a great option.

I am going back Monday or Tuesday for another blood draw to make sure the numbers are going up appropriately. They don't think it's ectopic, but we won't know for sure until we see it in ultrasound at around 6-8 weeks.

As unplanned as this is and as freaked out as we are, we plan to continue the pregnancy. So my EDD is around the end of February/beginning of March.

I had no idea IUDs could travel like that! I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around this, but I know we will love this baby like crazy. I just keep thinking about how life will work as a family of five...and I have no clue. Pretty sure my face is permanently stuck like this: @-)

  • My jaw literally dropped open reading this. First of all, congrats on the unexpected pregnancy. Sounds like you are shocked but not devastated by the news. Secondly, I hope that the IUD doesn't cause you any problems.

  • Wow! That is a shocker on both fronts. Congrats on the surprise LO. WTF on the IUD, I had no idea they were so mobile. I hope the IUD does not cause issues.
  • Thanks everyone! I went through the freaked out/devastated/sobbing part yesterday. But DH was extremely sweet and got me calmed down. Today I'm able to laugh about it. @Trixi282‌ I'm pretty sure that's exactly what I looked like.
For those who asked, I'm not sure what the plan is as far as what would happen if the IUD became an emergency. It didn't even occur to me to ask. They don't seem at all concerned at how it will affect the pregnancy but I'll need to ask about that too.

But yes, we are coming around to be excited about the baby! @nesenotes‌, are you kidding? 5? If never heard of this, never even knew it was freaking possible!

    Holy. Shit.

Girl, you have every right to be shocked!  I hope they locate the IUD and it stops causing you pain.  Congrats on the pregnancy, however unplanned and surprising it may be, and I wish you all the best possible outcomes!

FC: I have never checked my IUD since Oct 2012 and now I think I will go get it looked at.

Get that bad boy checked! L 2.0 would be great, but better if it is by design and not because your IUD decides it wants a vacation.
