Trying to Get Pregnant

Anyone know someone who did a DIY IUD removal?

We are going to start TTC within the next few months so I need to go to the doctor to get my IUD removed... I've heard that it's easy to just do it yourself though.  I doubt that I would actually do this, but was curious...  Did anyone remove their own IUD or know someone who did?

Re: Anyone know someone who did a DIY IUD removal?

  • I'm not going to do it.  I was just wondering if this was a common thing...

  • AAHK! Why would anyone even think that was a good idea?

  • YouTube. But I would strongly recommend that you don't. I have a friend who had the Mirena and it had to be removed surgically. Twice. It implanted into her uterus. Twice. It happens.

It all makes sense now, we should all be getting our advice from KU 16 year olds. Unfortunately I do actually hear a lot of people getting advice from these "reality" shows.

I didn't have an IUD but I would imagine that if I went to a doctor to have it put in, I most definitely would take my butt right back to the doctor to have it removed...

It doesn't even save a few bucks anymore.  If your health insurance isn't grandfathered out of the health care reform laws it's now a preventive care procedure to have it removed AND IT'S COVERED AT 100%.  What the fucking fuck, go get it removed FOR FREE by your doctor.

It took my doctor 45 minutes, the guidance of ultrasound & multiple "oops, almost had it!" to get that god awful thing out of me. Totally easy.

Also, I get the feeling you've stuck your whole arm up there trying to pull it out more than once with no luck so you came here for advice on how to do it. The only advice I have to offer is go to your doctor and never listen to someone that tells you pulling something out of your uterus is easy.

I think Pinterest just tells you how to bedazzle it or cover it in burlap.
I believe that is called vajazzling. I'm not even going to link that for you.

It can't really be all that expensive to take out, can it?

Edit: And if the cost of removing it is prohibitive, I am given to understand that babies are adorable pits that you throw your money into.
I had implanon (in the arm) removed a couple years ago when I had no insurance, it was about $200 for removal... with that said, I would never even consider removing it myself...

UO: I would totally do it myself at home. It would be incredibly difficult to grab the strings, and a solid grasp is super important! So, I'd probably steal some ring forceps from work & make my husband try. If it didn't come out immediately without any difficulty, I'd make an appointment for professional removal. Of course... I am trained to place & remove IUD's, so I have a good understanding of the risks (and...they really are minimal compared to IUD insertion!). I wouldn't advise a patient to take it out on her own & wouldn't advise anyone on the internet to do so, either. But would I flip my shit if, say, my best friend wanted to take hers out on her own? No. I'd just be like -- "do it during business hours" LOL!

True story - we had a patient once who took out her contraceptive implant (the rod in the arm!!) by herself at home
