Noise sensitivity (PR)

I took DS and DD to a big rig day today. It looked fun. There were dump trucks and street sweepers and plows and a tanker and school buses and an ice cream truck.

DS was so excited, until we got close. There were a few honks and he just freaked. The honks really weren't that loud, even accounting for my bad hearing. No other child or parent was reacting. But a honk every three or four minutes, even on the other side of the parking lot, just made him lose it.

He cried a lot and was trying to bolt and hide, so we left.

He's always reacted to sounds (jumping and running when a loud car passes or complaining about music).

When do I start to worry there's something more to this? Is there such a thing as being overly sensitive to sounds? When we've gone to the movies he covers his ears the whole time. :-/

My DS is also very sensitive to sounds. He used to get hysterical if I tried to vacuum when he was around. He would turn purple and scream and shake. He also would cover his ears if I flushed the toilet. It has gotten better in the past couple months, so I am hoping he is outgrowing it. I don't know when it could indicate a problem, I've wondered the same thing. Hopefully it gets better for your DS.

Does he ever try to run from toilets? DS will cry over the "too loud" public toilets.

This has been happening for about a year. I didn't think it was THAT unusual until I saw him freak while all the other kids, from baby to preteen, were happy and calm.

  • Some kids just are sensitive to loud noises I guess. I have a friend whose 6 year old hides under the covers and cries every 4th of July. Other than that she's a perfectly normal (and in fact gifted) kid.

  • DS is sensitive to noises too. I can't vacuum around him at all. When he uses a public restroom I have to let him leave the stall before I flush. I think he would have reacted the same way your ds did to the trucks.

  • DD is sensitive to noise as well. She's 4 and I think its gotten worse. She will freak out if we go into a public restroom that has an automatic flushing toilet.. like epic tantrum screaming, kicking freaking out. I've learned to cover the sensor with my hand and that usually does the trick. She also freaks when the cleaning ladies come and turn the vacuum on. No advice, just understanding @RondackHiker
