NPR--is this common knowledge

My husband mentioned Chinese Water Torture in conversation and I had to ask him what it was. Do any of you ladies or SO's know what it is and agree it's somewhat common knowledge?

  • I am familiar, though I couldn't tell you why!

  • I've heard it many times before.  I think it's used a lot to describe really boring situations.

  • I know what it is :) I have a weird family though!
  • I thought it was common knowledge, but I couldn't tell you where I learned about it or how long I've known what it was.

  • I know what it is but I don't know if it is common knowledge. I don't really remember where I first learned about it but it was probably from my husband. He has a fascination with all things history, war, spy, etc related.

  • I would consider it common knowledge.  I just asked DH, he agrees, common knowledge.  We often have different "common knowledge" due to very different childhoods, but this one we overlap on :)

Isn't common knowledge just something that "most people know" but you aren't really taught?  Yeah - I have heard of this though in answer to your question :)
I think, in my area/circle/whatever, it is common to possess that knowledge, therefore common knowledge.

  • I think it is a phrase that was floating around for a while but is fading out of popular culture. I think waterboarding might be the current equivalent?

  • I learned about it on an episode of Mythbusters! To me it means something slow and painful like business meetings!

I know what it is. I think I learned about it in an episode of Batman and Robin starring Adam West and Burt Ward:

(it's pebbles, but the same concept)
