about to loose it (rant)

I think I'm about to loose it. Our German Shepherd is going through his "heat". He has now mounted our 13 yr old pit bull, three times. (Thank goodness she's fixed) He has destroyed his kennel and has pee'd on the floor twice. I've gotten my MIL's kennel and I swear I will go crazy if he damages this one and breaks out.

In other news. Yay for hitting the 14wk and still feeling normal! :)

  • Is he neutered? If not, that will be a big help. If he is, a lot of that is behavioral.

  • He is getting neutered next Wednesday, which can not come soon enough.

Just don't expect that behavior to stop overnight once he is neutered. It still could take a while for all the testosterone to decrease in his body.

  • I'm going to gather this isn't normal behavior for him?
Sounds like something sparked him, new dog in the area? Dogs are sensitive to sudden change just like cats.
Best of luck though! i can't stand unruly dogs.
Actually i'm more of a cat person.

  • Hopefully you are able to make it through until his appointment next Wednesday.  Might not be a bad thing to mention the behavior to the vet now since then they would have it on record but they might also know if something could be more than just a hormone or behavioral thing.

How old is he? Are you doing training with him? Some dogs need more structure, and if he is a mature male, he most likely will continue the same behavior even after being neutered unless you are able to get some training in him. My parents are experienced dog people (have bred dogs in the past, train and show competitively in obedience and agility) and they currently have a 2 year old un-eutered male (due to a health condition can't undergo anesthesia) who needs boundaries or gets a bit...not out of control, but driven to exert his dominance over the rest of the pack. And my folks work with him regularly. Hormones are a tricky thing!!
