anyone used reglan?

I have to go back to work in a month and want to have a good amount of breast milk frozen when I do. I have the reglan, but after reading some of the side effects I am afraid to take it. Has anyone used it to produce more milk, and did you have any of the side effects?

Re: anyone used reglan?

  • Try Domperidone instead - you need to order it from overseas. But do you have low supply? You don't mention anything about that and taking meds just to get an over supply is not healthy.

  • Right now my supply seems to barely satisfy her, but I'm worried that my supply will dip when I go back to work. I'm not looking for oversupply, I'm hoping to avoid having to supplement.

I used Reglan for 2 1/2 months and had no reactions whatsoever. It truly helped increase my supply which was not enough to satisfy my DD. I can say my supply decreased when I went back to work but was all my doing. I would get preoccupied in a project and not want to stop to have to pump. The Reglan increased the amount so I wouldn't have to pump as often. I also took Fenugreek, Blessed Thistle, drank lots of water and NA beer in combination with the Reglan. It increased my combined amount from 3-4oz per/pump to 7-8oz per/pump. It helped me out significantly. My pediatrician asked me not to take the Dom as she didn't have enough literature on the possible effects it could have on the baby and wasn't regulated by the FDA. Since Reglan is prescribed to babies with Reflux issues she said it was a safer route. I now have 2 packs (100 per/pack) of Dom that have never been opened and don't know what to do with. I am starting to ween my DD from BF altogether I can't take the biting anymore. Everyone is different, but I had no reactions to Reglan.

    Good luck!

  • Right now I am taking all the recommended supplements, eating oatmeal every day, and drinking the NA beer. I plan on continuing this before I ever actually took the drug.  I also try to pump as much as I can after nursing. When I do return to work pumping will be very difficult. I only work for about 6 hours a day. Is that too much of a stretch in between pumping/nursing? Im just asking to see if others had taken the drug and if anyone had any of the side effects. I am fully aware of all the side effects and none of them seem like much fun.
  • Yes, 6 hrs is too long to go between pumping/nursing if you hope to maintain supply and not get blocked ducts.

  • I used it several years ago for nausea after surgery and it gave me a dystonic reaction. It was terrifying, but after a shot of Benadryl in the ER I was fine. I guess it only happens to like 2% of people and I was in that lucky 2%.

  • Yeah, you'll need to pump once in the middle of your 6 hours (twice if you have a long commute). You don't want to go more than 3 hours between either LO nursing or pumping if you're struggling with supply.

  • Pumping at least once while I am working is a priority, but I work in a family owned business that employs way less than 50 people. They are like family to me and I know that even though they would love to see me have that time to pump, I'm afraid when we are very busy it just won't be possible. But then again I don't smoke so in all reality a 15 min pumping session is kind of the same thing?
