T has been having recurring ear infections this year (5 since Jan). Our Dr referred her to an ENT. We saw him this afternoon and he was horrified by what he saw in her ears and said grommets ASAP. Then told me to bring her to hospital at 6:30 tomorrow morning! Was not expecting ASAP to mean that! Anyone been through this and can talk me through it? Gah!

Yep, tubes. She's have a general, so no food/water after 3am, and we have to admit her tomorrow morning at 6:30 which is WAAAAY earlier than we normally get up.

I am trying to find out if any of my friends have experience with this. Everyone seems to know people who have had them, but they are all older kids, or they happened long ago. @RVASC811, I wish we had a couple of days to get used to the idea... we're feeling a bit sprung upon.

  • I was completely sold on tubes when several mothers told me that their children were completely different kids after having tubes and their only regret was not doing it sooner. I saw a baby girl (around 13 months) at the hospital literally 1 hour after she had tubes and she was perfectly fine. Sorry that this was so rushed on you, but I think this will be a good thing.

  • And... I've also heard that tubes don't *technically* stop ear infections, but they allow the gunk to drain properly.

  • I did a rotation in ENT while in school. Tubes are a VERY minor procedure. In adults they would put them in during an office visit. Children can not sit still enough, so they take them to the OR for conscious sedation. I have not heard of anyone using general anethesia for tubes. Each kid responds differently to the sedation. Some wake up very angry. The procedure itself is like cutting a 1 cm laceration in a layer of skin (eardrum).
  • So glad it went smoothly!

  • Glad it went well and she is on the road to recovery!
