Just Ordered a Pizza

So my question for you is, what is an acceptable tip for the pizza delivery guy? My standard is about $3, but my sister informed me that I am a cheapskate. What do you think an acceptable pizza tip is?

Re: Just Ordered a Pizza

  • I was expecting a "what's for lunch" post.

It depends on how far out you are, I'd say 3 is pretty standard.

  • I just rubbed both of these posts in her face, so hopefully no one gets on to disagree with us now. (Sister is the only one who knows I am KU--I had to tell someone, and she is the best secret keeper. She thinks it is funny that I spend so much of my time on this site. My answer to her was, "Just you wait...")

  • I usually give them at least 5 bucks, but it depends on how much I've ordered, too.

  • I usually leave $3 - $5, so I don't think you're a cheapskate!

  • 3 sounds good. There is usually also a delivery charge (although I'm not sure who that money goes to at the end of the day).

It really adds up. But its worth it sometimes. And I have no idea where that money goes. Gas money? Anyone know?

  • Depends how much pizza you ordered! I'd say $3-5 is appropriate!

Also, I'm now considering getting pizza from the cafeteria at work instead of salad bar...

  • In all seriousness... I usually tip 3-5 on a normal order... if its a crazy amount of food.. more.

  • We order delivery so infrequently, but I usually give $3-4, more if the weather is bad (but it's LA, so that's not very often :P)  We ordered pizza a couple of nights ago and it was sooooooooo good, and was the first meal in a few days that didn't make me instantly nauseated.  Not a good sign for my weight gain goal this pregnancy!

  • Usually I believe the delivery fee goes towards gas money for the driver. They typically don't get paid anything other then tips (no paycheck) so they throw them maybe 20-30 bucks for gas. My ex from way back when did it in the weekends.

    I also usually tip 5.

  • I usually do $2 and change or $3, but today will be higher since it's raining. If they are rude or extremely late, I don't tip. A tip is for doing something good.

A tip is how these people are paid. And, it's important to remember under most circumstances they are "late" because they were held up by the restaurant (food not ready, too many deliveries too far apart from each other etc) as I stated before, even if they were to get a pay check- by law it is only going to be 2-3 dollars an hour because that is the rate for tipped employees.

I can totally understand being extremely rude being an issue, but there are very few instances I can think of where it is ever acceptable not to tip.

  • And now pizza is on the menu for today's lunch.  What kind of pizza did you order?  Must we really avoid all cured meat...?  I love pepperoni :(

As for bad service -- remember that the delivery folks are often just some teenage punks and they know where you live...  I'd rather just tip them and have that peace of mind.  The pizza joint is on my way home from work, so I've never had it delivered before.
