Birth certificate/social security number

My little guy is 7 weeks old now and we still haven't received his birth certificate which means I haven't been able to get his social security number either.

Just curious, when did you all get the birth certificate in the mail! And then the social security card? Should i call someone and check on this?

Re: Birth certificate/social security number

  • We got the SS card a few weeks after being home from the hospital. We have to send $25 and the form in for the birth certificate which it said we couldn't do before a certain date- I just have to remember to go buy a stamp to send in the form.

  • We automatically got his social security card in the mail after filling out the forms at the hospital. I had to go to the vital statistics bureau to pick up a copy of his birth certificate about three weeks after he was born. I didn't need one to get the other. Are you sure you need his social to get his birth certificate?
  • His birth certificate came within 2 weeks and his SS card arrived about a week later. Both came automatically after filling out the paperwork at the hospital.
  • Forms filled out hospital and both came in the mail during week three within a day of each other. I would probably call and check on it.

  • I have been womdering also. We filled out the forms in the hospital and he is 5 weeks tomorrow. You don't have to have the birth certificate to get the SS card (and vice versa). I am getting antsy though bc I have to send a copy of the birth certificate to verify insurance coverage and I have a deadline of mid July to do it.

  • Richmond sucks so I know our hold up lies within the state. Birth certificates will vary with timing by state.

  • We picked up her birth certificate a couple days after she was born. Her SS card came about two weeks later. We also didn't need her bc to get the card. We did the paperwork at the hospital.
  • We got his SS card first, a few days after getting home from the hospital. Then we got his birth certificate when he was about 3 weeks old
  • I forgot to add that when we were in the hospital filling out the paperwork, we asked how long because we are going to canada in August. She said married couples take a few weeks but babies whose parents are not married take up to 2 months! I'm in PA so it might just be my state
  • Thanks everyone! Appearantly my hospital doesn't know what they are talking about because I called the courthouse and I just need to go there and pick it up!
  • We got her SS card a couple weeks after she was born but we still haven't received her birth certificate and she's 6 weeks so this is good to know! I need to call the hospital.

We filled out paper work at the hospital for the SS card and received it automatically in the mail. For the birth certificate we had to go to city hall to request it. Got it within 30min.

In my state, hospital takes care of getting the SS card but we have to fill out a form and submit $25 to get the birth certificate.  There is no indication on the birth certificate form that we would need a social security number first.  You might want to check with both your social security office and vital statistics to see what you need to do.

Same here. We are still awaiting his social, however.

  • My hospital takes care of the SSN when we fill out the paperwork for the birth certificate. However, I have to request a copy of the BC, it doesn't get sent to me automatically. I called the town she was born in. Her SS card came when she was about two weeks old.

  • I had to go to the clerk's office at city hall in the city LO was born in to get the birth cert. In the state LO was born in, we can request the social security number application to be submitted at the same time. It took about 2 weeks for the birth cert to be ready, and I got the social security card in the mail within 3-4 weeks.

It’s not that I don’t like you, it’s that I don’t know you. Stranger Danger.

I know it varies by state but we are not mailed Birth Certificates.  You have to go to the hall of records and pick it up.
The SSC came within 2 weeks.  I would definitely call about that, you should have received it by now.  Assuming the proper paperwork was filed in the hospital.

  • If your ss card was processed but did not arrive, you need ID for yourself and the baby to get a replacement. Birth cert is NOT ID. You 're easiest form if ID will likely be an original letter or medical record from a health care provider with child's full name and DOB from AFTER the day of birth.
