Home Birth

So far, I feel like the only crazy person who is planning to have my baby at home with a midwife... any other weirdos like me around here? :)

Or maybe STMs who've had their babies at home?

There are actually quite a few home birth mommas on this board. I sorta for this group--I go to a free standing birth center. It's not affiliated with a hospital and ran by CPMs (non-nurse midwives). I go, give birth and am home a few hours later. They do do home births as well, I just opt to go to them.

I wouldn't mind that, either! My midwife is a CPM as well, but she only does home births. I only wish that Tricare would cover her. They only cover CNMs, but there's only one in the state and they're too far.

    Yay, natural birth buddy! <:-P

  • With DS we planned a home birth with midwives up until 4 days before my due date and found out he was breech, ending up with a c-section.  We are with our midwives again this time and they are not allowed to attend a VBAC at home so it will hopefully be a med-free hospital birth for us this time around.

I know that doesn't answer your question, but just know there are lots of people out there who think that home birth is a perfectly safe and healthy option for low-risk mamas.  I know lots of women who have had amazing beautiful home births with midwives, so don't feel like you're alone!

  • I'm also hoping for a home birth. I'm really excited about it but also trying to remain open minded because I realize that if any complications arise in the next 20 weeks then I will be giving birth at the hospital. I'm in Canada and I actually haven't heard of birthing centers around here but I live in a relatively small town (90,000 people) so maybe that's why?

  • I wish :( Planned for it last time, didn't happen. Since I had a csection I can't have a home birth
Audrey is going to be a big sister!

  • I had a csec with my daughter in 2011, and I am planning to have a HBAC this time :) tonight I have been watching birth videos on YouTube-- love them! I plan to do hypnobabies, and hopefully have a peaceful birth at home this time :)
  • We're planning one too! Hoping all goes well so we can!
  • Not planning on a home birth here, but I was there for my bff's home birth of her 2nd a few weeks ago and it was beautiful! She gave birth at 7:30pm and was putting her 3 year old to bed at 10pm. I can certainly see the appeal and props to all you mommas that are going for it! Hoping for natural myself just opting to do it in a hospital!

  • I am interested for sure but SO was uncomfortable with the idea.  I would love a BC birth but there isn't one in my city.  The nearest, I think, is a little over an hour away and the distance was too far for comfort for both of us.

  • I wish I could birth at home but we have to go to a free standing birth center in order to use midwives legally.  It is as close to home as I can get so I will take it, but will still be super jealous of your experience.

  • Planned for an unmedicated hospital birth with my DD but due to other extenuating circumstances that didn't happen. I personally wouldn't do a home birth just because I live so far from the hospital (45-60 minutes) that I would be afraid we couldn't get there soon enough in an emergency situation.

Having a "natural birth" does not mean the only place that it can occur is in one's home. I plan to have a "natural birth", too, but in the hospital with my OB.
True- I just couldn't say home birth buddy, since that isn't exactly the case. And I hope it goes well at the hospital too! Are you planning on taking Bradley classes or something similiar?

Birth centers sound nice too! At least you won't have to blow up/fill your own birth pool, if you're doing that. I wouldn't even mind being at my midwife's office, it feels like a home there.

  • I had a homebirth with my second birth.  It was so great not having to drive somewhere in labor, and sleep in my own bed without unnecessary interruptions that first night!  This time I just couldn't justify the $3800 it would cost when we pay so much every month for insurance (which will completely cover a hospital birth).  Since my births are super fast I'm not concerned about unwanted interventions at the hospital (plus it's a very natural friendly hospital).

What about birth homies from another home? Wait, that sounds weird, too.

Definitely want to take classes but haven't done enough research yet to figure out which ones. I've heard great things about hypnobirthing from an IRL friend.

  • I would love an HBAC....  but I just don't feel comfortable planning one after my daughter's cord issue.

I know I have mentioned this here before...  but I secretly hope that when my MW comes to our house while I am in labour that she will take a look and say it is too late to go to the hospital and that I will be having the baby at home.  And that the baby shoots out 15 minutes later.

Hey... a girl can dream!   :P

  • Honestly, I never even considered a home birth as an option. I don't know anyone who has done it and would be way to worried that something would go wrong. I don't want to even have to wait 15 minutes to get LO to a hospital. My husband was born and was quick to need plastic surgery, and it may be genetic (although there were no issues with DS), so I want to be in a hospital.

  • @runningmama14‌ yes. I am seeing Certified Professional midwifes at a local birth center. It is actually illegal for me to deliver at the birth center bc of VBAC-- my options are home (with professional midwives) or hospital. I have already had my ob sign off approval done for my HBAC as well. As long as I continue to have a healthy pregnancy, I should be good to go for my HBAC :) our local midwives are awesome and used to attending primary hbacs bc the local hospitals have very high csec rates (I had a very unnecessary csec in 2011-- i never even made it to my due date bc the dr told me I needed a csec bc baby was going to be "too big." My daughter was 7lbs 3 oz when born). I'm not against a RCS as long as it is done for medically necessary purposes :)
  • Also- I live very close to a wonderful hospital, and the midwives watch you very closely. If they even think that there might be a chance of something going wrong they transfer you. I'm comfortable knowing that they have our best interest at heart at all times.
  • I would love to  have a home birth but didn't think it was a good idea for my first pregnancy because of my age and any possible complications, then I was diagnosed with GD and then they told me I had group B Strep... and in the end I had a CS due to failure to progress. I am happy I was at a hospital because my DD's heart rate dropped while I was waiting for the cervidil to take and because of my failure to progress we really needed to get her out (my water had broken 24 hours prior!).
All that being said... if I had been 10 years younger (I was 37 at that time) I would have totally had a home water birth!! It's something I REALLY think I would have enjoyed. Good luck to you!

  • I am birthing at a birth center with my MW. Probably my next one will be at home with MW's.

The birthing center where I am currently receiving care is about a quarter of a mile away from the biggest hospital in a 2 hour radius. I was told that in the rare cases they do have to transport, the ambulance is there before they can get the paperwork on the copier. That makes me feel so reassured!

I feel that a homebirth is an option for anyone who has a low risk pregnancy and who wants a natural med-free birth. I have an advantage in the knowing someone who did it in that all my younger siblings were born at home. Not all the births were complication free, either. One of my siblings had to go to the hospital shortly after birth because she wasn't breathing well.

In talking with midwives one theme I have noticed is that they do want to be near a hospital in case something goes drastically wrong. The chances are small, but they won't risk it. My midwife mentioned a mom who has a history of horrible hemorrhaging and who lives out in the middle of nowhere. My midwife had to gently put her foot down and tell this gal that if she had another baby with this practice that she would need to come to the birthing center because being so far away from emergency care was too dangerous.

My main priority with wanting a home birth is that I want to labor on my own terms. If my first requires 48 hours of labor, then so be it. I don't want an emergency c-section for "failing to progress" because my body doesn't know what it is doing yet.
Yes... this is what I am afraid of! Although I seriously hope my labor doesn't take 48 hours. I PRAY. Oh man.

I completely see the appeal of laboring and birthing at home. My mother in law had 6 of her 7 kids at home, and only one in a hospital (due to laws where they were living at the time), all of which were natural and drug free. Two of her daughters who have kids also had their kids at home. It seems so calm and as if you're more in control. I know many others who more recently birthed at home and say they highly reccomend it!

Good luck and keep us posted!
  • Home births can be a great thing and hospitals aren't always necessary or the best option. I think as long as you're low risk and have a hospital close by it's a perfectly respectable option. I knew I wanted to have as low intervention birth as safely possible but I also wanted to know if something goes wrong that we would have access to medical care asap.

So I started looking into midwives and found a highly rated birth center that pre-admits you to the hospital that is across the street. I was super excited and after attending an orientation with DH we immediately filled out the paperwork to be able become a patient.

I feel like we are getting the best of both worlds, at a cheaper price. But not going to lie, I'm a little, okay a lot, intimidated that they send you home 4-6 hours later if all goes well!
  • I don't post much, but thought I'd chime in as one of the ladies planning a home birth. I'm excited and hoping everything stays on the right low risk track :) This is my first baby.

I know right! We're just missing out on that day or two of pampering by the hospital staff.. maybe my family will fill that void :P
