Cloth Diapering

finally ordering...

I'm sure you get tons and tons of posts like this... but I figured it doesn't hurt to ask again.

So I've been looking and researching for months about diapers and we've decided to do prefolds/workhorses and covers for the nb stage (maybe throw in a pocket or aio here or there). Now the thing I've been indecisive on is the amount of each... and what sizes I should get. I know this baby is already measuring small (already going in for extra growth u/s for a VCI issue) so I'm thinking she may be in the nb stash for a while. We're still not sure if cd'ing is for us, so I don't want to blow a bunch of money on something I won't use. So we were thinking maybe a medium sized stash that I can supplement with disposable diapers if we don't like it, and if we do like it, I can always order more.

At this point I was thinking two dozen prefolds and then maybe 5 workhorses. I was also thinking a dozen each of the yellow and orange edge GMD prefolds and just the orange edge workhorse. I also plan on ordering 4 nb diaper covers.

My questions...
Should I have more workhorses? Should I order them in more than just the nb size? And from what I gather, the no closure ones are better, is this true?
As for the prefold stash, should I order more? Should I skip the nb size all together and just get infant?
Is ordering 4 diaper covers a good amount, too many, or not enough?

Re: finally ordering...

  • I would suggest more orange edge prefolds or some flats.  We skipped the the orange edge WHs and went right to yellow but our LO was 8 lbs when she was born.  I have 6 and that is just enough.  So for you maybe 1 more orange WH and a couple yellow.  I like the closureless for a more custom fit w/ a snappi.  You will probably want more covers.  I guess all this depends on how much you want to supplement w/ sposies.  I found that when I had 1 in cloth if I used too many sposies than either my cloth sat dirty for too long or I was washing a really small load.  Once you start CDing you will probably find it soo easy that the sposies will fall to the wayside.

  • I personally think a full nb stash is worth it. The nb stage is when you go through 12-15 diapers a day and would drive me nuts to be using sposies then. I can't tell you how many times my son pooped in a fresh diaper, or peed during a diaper change.
If you haven't already, check out the GMD B/S/T Facebook page and look at the prices that things go of used. Sell them or save them for the next baby and it's totally worth having a full nb stash.

That being said, you can absolutely use small prefolds instead of nb if you really want to. You just have to fold them down an have some extra bulk.

I didn't use all GMD, but here's what we did:
-36 nb GMD prefolds, 8-10 covers
    - DS was 7lb15oz and long and skinny and these lasted for about 6-8 weeks.
-24 bummis "7-15lb" infant prefolds, and 6-8 thirsties duo size 1 covers/assunta tiny covers.
    - these lasted until about 5 months
    - 26 "15-30lb" prefolds of various brands. 8 thirsties size 2/assunta OS covers.
    - DS will be one next week, and we are still folding these prefolds down to fit. I have no doubt that they will last until potty training, because thy are super absorbent and can be trifolded if her ever gets too big to snappi.

Thanks for the advice. As for the disposible falling to the wayside, that's what I'm hoping. lol but hubby is still not 100% (huge eyeroll) so it's baby steps with him. So maybe I'll just add some yellow WH, since like you said they're more adjustable with the snappis, another set of nb prefolds, and a few more covers. How many covers do you suggest? 6? 8? or am I still way underestimating the amount of covers I'll go through?

@mrshudson618 thank you for the advice. We're hoping for more kiddos after this, so I can see buying a nb stash as a good investment. I don't feel bad about spending the money on them at all. I also like hearing what you did for your non-nb stash and that the infant prefolds still work well. I'm still debating on what we're going to do with that.

  • 6-8 is a good number.  Personally I have 8.  But I did all prefolds/flats/WHs and no pockets or AI1s.
  • 6-8 is plenty even for nb, especially with fitteds. I liked having way more than enough because we liked to be lazy and just do the angel wing fold instead of jelly-roll, so it was pretty hit or miss as to wether the poop would not get on the cover. The elastic on a fitted should contain well enough that you should be fine.

  • My ds was 5 pounds 14 ounces (dropped to 5pounds 8 ounces) and I was so glad I had ordered some of the Bummis preemie sized prefolds.

  • I might suggest the yellow edge prefolds if you really think baby is going to be tiny.(I know this sounds backwards) My lo was 5lbs 9 oz and dropped to 5lbs 7 oz. I had trouble getting some of the newborn covers to fit even with the bulk of the yellow edge underneath. The first few weeks the covers were too big over the orange work horses. I'm sure there are tinier covers, but I didn't think he was going to be quite that small so I didn't have any. I also didn't mind the bulk. the orange workhorses worked for about 4 months for us. We are also still wearing the yellow edge at 11 months and 16lbs, though I am in the minority on this one, most out grow them  by 5ish months, but you really do get your moneys worth out of the yellow edge.

  • I think what you have is just fine and I wouldn't buy any more until after LO is born. Shipping only takes a couple days.

My LO has worn prefolds and covers since birth - no WH, no snappis. I only had 4 NB covers, which worked just fine. She was 6lb 11oz at birth and outgrew NB in about a month.

Larger sizes I would buy more of because they're in them longer but by then you'll know whether or not you're on the CD bandwagon. :)
