Smelly laundry - detergent question

My husband and sons clothes stink! Mainly my husband's workout clothes. I have tried everything but he swears he can't smell anything. Has anyone tried thesports ddetergent? Not sure of the brand I just remember seeing it at a couple of sporting good stores. If you have used it does it work!? I'm sick of smelling his work out clothes and the clothes my son plays outside in. I didn't know 3 year Olds could be so smelly!

Re: Smelly laundry - detergent question

  • Soak the clothes in it first? Or put it in the washer. I haven't tried baking soda. I'll try it thanks.

I use vinegar on everything right now. I can't deal with any strong smells.

  • I would love to throw out his work out clothes he has had since high school but he has an attachment to them. And he says they don't smell... I think he says that so I don't throw them away.
  • Yea that's it. I couldn't think of it. I'll try the baking soda and vinegar first if that didn't work I'll try that.

I too have a hockey-planning big/sweaty husband! I use unscented laundry soap for sensitive skin (i.e. Tide or Nellie's) and then add vinegar to the wash (good for the colour and for taking smell out of things). The main concept is that I'm not trying to mask the smell w/ something scented, but take the smell out. I find it works really well! We live in humid climate, so this is helpful for towels too. I've used Nikwax BaseWash (basically detergent for wicking sports clothing). It definitely works, but not any better than vinegar and natural detergent, which is way cheaper and easier to find!
  • Throw in some vinegar. That should fix it.

  • I washed DHs sports uniforms on the sanitize cycle. Do you have that or have you tried hot?

  • My favorite laundry additive is Ammonia! It cuts through body oils and the residue left from body wash/sprays/whatever. It also get the "Boy" smell out of towels like nothing else!

I've tried vinegar, but I find that with my HE front loader the ammonia works a million times better.

Not to state the obvious, but if it still stinks, it is not clean. The perfumey stuff is only going to mask the smell. It is mostly likely bacteria causing the stink on workout clothes. Extra wash and rinse cycles should help.

I use Tide on cloth diapers (talk about stink!). Also, use the hottest setting your washer has. It may sound weird, but try line drying the clothes in the sun. UV rays work wonders.
