Local breastfeeding support group

Are any of you ladies attending a local breast feeding support class? If so, what's it like and how do you like it? I'm a FTM and looking to meet other moms in the area but I'm totally nervous to attend the local group for the first time, I'm not having any issues breastfeeding and I know I shouldn't be nervous to attend and I'll get over it but I wanted to hear your opinions if you attend one or something like it! I think hearing other ladies experiences will make me less nervous to attend!

Thanks in advance!!

Re: Local breastfeeding support group

  • I do. It is great. The LC offers hands on support if needed and we also share stories and advice on all sorts of other topics

  • I love my La Leche League group! We meet once a month at various mama's houses and it's pretty informal... People bring snacks, etc, and we all introduce ourselves and our kids (there's new people every time) and then people can raise the issues they're facing and other moms with experience will share how they've handled that, etc... and eventually it just turns into chatting. You can get up and down, get food, deal with your crying baby, etc, as you want/need - it's a really safe environment that way. Our leader brings the a group library and I've been able to read some awesome books that way!

I really recommend at least trying your local group to see if you like it :) I started going when I was pregnant with DD and continued after she weaned herself around 1 yr old until I got pregnant with DS, etc, and now I'm back to having a little one again!

  • I go to a weekly group offered through the hospital and really enjoy it.

Our group is very unstructured. The LC is there and you can weigh baby, ask LC or other moms any questions, etc. it's very laid back which I like!

  • I go every week to the one at my hospital. We get weekly weight chcks which is nice. You can also share any concerns and/or just listen to other peoples. The LC will offer advice if you have issues. We also get a guest speaker in each week so you can hear about new things to do with LO & get a chance to try stuff for free.
  • I go to a La Leche League weekly group and really enjoy it! It's very casual and informal. They also have monthly meetings that cover specific topics. I would definitely recommend joining a group if you can. From my experience, everyone is really welcoming and supportive.

This is exactly what we do.  It's been great to meet new moms and have a LC there to answer any questions.  Plus, it's helpful for getting more comfortable BF in public.

  • I drove over an hour down to bakersfeild to the nearest BFing support group. It was worth it
  • This!

It was such a help when we started out. I'm not sure I would have been able to stick with BF without it.

That said, now that BF is established I still like to go for the social aspect. It's nice just to get out of the house and interact with adults. And being a FTM it's amazing what you learn just by interacting with other mommies. It's like posting a thread on TB, but with immediate feedback and that dynamic interaction you could only get in person.

So, to answer your question, yes I totally think it's worth seeking out a group in your area. Chances are you won't have the oldest baby and will glean some valuable info regardless of how confident you feel in your BF/parenting abilities.
