Sooooo Gassy

My LO is so gassy. :( I try burping her frequently and she does burp and fart during/after every feeding but it doesn't all come out. She is 3 weeks old and seems miserable, crying from it! Yesterday I bought gas drops and they seemed to help a little bit. Today I didn't give them after every feeding and she is getting worse again. I thought BF babies weren't supposed to get so gassy. :(

I've been watching my diet to avoid gassy foods but it doesn't seem to be helping. Sincr yesterday I've been block feeding BC I suspected I might have a foremilk/hindmilkbimbalance since her poop has been really green and wattery the past several days. I'm worried about messing my supply up but worried more about weeing my little girl so uncomfortable!

I feel like I'm doing something wrong but don't know what!

Re: Sooooo Gassy

  • Have you looked into avoiding dairy? My LO ended up having a reaction to dairy so I had to cut it out. Look on kellymom.com for symptoms of dairy intolerance

  • I second trying to cut out dairy to see if it helps. My baby was the same way and we ultimately switched her to soy formula. We have to give her formula in addition to bm because of my low supply. Even with such a low supply (she gets less than 50% bm) I will notice it affects her if I have too much dairy.

Also remember that to a certain extent some gasiness is normal at this age and it's fine to use the gas drops. We used them for a good two months.

Also, if your baby spits up a lot in addition to the gas, I would ask your ped about reflux. We had to put our baby on Zantac because she didn't improve on her own. She still takes it at 6 months and it helps tremendously.

@Guennie‌ - did you use them after every feeding every day for 2 months?
  • We didn't use them after every single feeding but we used them A LOT. I know there are people who do use them with every feeding. It's fine to give them after every feeding as long as you don't exceed 12 doses a day.

  • Has anyone tried gripe water? Does this work? I am in a similar situation!
  • We tried gripe water sometimes at night and it did calm her down a bit at least enough to relax and fall asleep.

We had a gassy phase too and I cut out most dairy (no milk, ice cream, minimal cheese, etc) and it seemed to really help. I did that for probably 2 months then slowly added back when she got bigger/older and she has no issues anymore. Worth a shot!
  • I also give LO tummy and back massages.  Put LO on her stomach across your knees and rub or tap her back.  Or put LO on her back and rub her tummy in circles.

Thx! I often burp her laying across my knees and have tried the tummy rub and leg bicycles. Poor baby. :(

@lindseyb624‌ - I'm glad the gripe water and dairy cut-outs worked for you. I hardly eat dairy but will see if I can cut down more. Thx!
