Spotting at Six Weeks/Doctor Response...updated

I hope you guys don't mind if I post here, I just wondered if anyone has dealt with something similar.

I'm six weeks pregnant, (fourth pregnancy: miscarriage, son 18mo, miscarriage in dec, pregnant now). I started spotting yesterday, not a ton, not red, just brown/pink. I have a viability ultrasound next Thursday already scheduled. When I called my doctor this morning they told me just to wait until Thursday and take it easy.

I should also note that I am MTHFR and was on started on lovenox for my son by a different doctor when we lived in another state, when we moved my current doctor had me continue for the pregnancy, but because I was recessive and the research has changed how this is handled/tested (?) they didn't think it was necessary to continue for other pregnancies. I mentioned all of this when speaking to the nurse, and told her that I'm concerned that not being on the lovenox is maybe causing this.

Logically I know there is absolutely nothing they can do, and if it's gonna happen its gonna happen. But I though they would be more proactive and have me come in for an ultrasound or... something, I don't know, especially since this would be my third miscarriage. Is this normal or are your doctors more proactive?

update: I just wanted to thank everyone for their thoughts, it helped calm my nerves over the weekend. I was able to get in for an ultrasound today and saw one perfect little heartbeat! They also found a smallish subchorionic hematoma that is hopefully the cause of the bleeding.

  • I think that spotting (especially brown) that doesn't also have cramps is generally not a big concern. Of course it is horribly scary to experience, but I'm not that surprised that they said to wait til your appt. That being said, I did go in for an ultrasound when I had brown spotting but I didn't have anything scheduled for a couple of weeks.

If your symptoms change, or if you are just too worried, I think it is fine to call them again an explain your concerns. Good luck!! I hope it stops soon and all is well.

  • I'm sorry you're going through this... spotting is so scary! I had spotting in week 6 as well. It was mostly a tan/brown discharge, but I did have an instance of pink. It lasted almost a whole week. I went in for an ultrasound and everything was fine with the baby, and they couldn't find a reason for the spotting other than maybe my progesterone suppositories irritated my cervix (just a theory, not confirmed).

Like PP said, as long as it's not bright red and accompanied by cramps it shouldn't be a big concern. Lots of women, on this board especially, had some spotting in first trimester. Just take it easy and keep an eye on it. Good luck!

I was on progesterone with my son as well and did have a tiny bit of spotting attributed to that. I'm not on them this time (which worries me even though my progesterone is fine) and doesn't give me something to 'blame' for the spotting. But you are right, the lack of cramping and no red are good signs.
  • A 6 weeks ultrasound could be more scary than anything. At 6 weeks there is still a chance that they wont be able to see the fetal pole and that it would just add to your agitation.

Brown blood is usually an old bleed. Could be an irritated cervix or your ute squishing out old blood. Its common to bleed in early pregnancy. I did with both of my previous pregnancies (for different reasons)

Feel better mama! Try your best not to stress.

  • I had an episode of bright red bleeding (more than spotting, but didn't need more than a pantyliner) at 8 weeks that lasted about 12 hours, but no cramping.  I'm still having brown/old blood come out when I sweep out the progesterone.  Spotting is not always a cause for concern, especially when there's no cramps, but if you are that concerned I would call back and try to get it moved up.
