Too popular?

Hubby just informed me he absolutely loves the name Ella. While it is a beautiful name, I just think it's too popular. I am a teacher and don't want my daughter to be one of 8 Ella's in her class/school. Thoughts?

Re: Too popular?

  • Like PP said it's just a personal preference.  I wouldn't drop a name if I really loved it because it was popular.  There are worse things than sharing a name with other people for me.  And I only know 1 IRL.

I would not personally use the name Ella but it is pretty.

  • DH likes Emma, I feel the same way you do about Ella.  Beautiful name, just too popular.  Trying to get him to go for Amelia or Emilie.

    What about Elaina or Elise?

  • Before I opened this thread, just reading the title made me think of the name Ella.

I know so many Ella's that the name nauseates me. But if you really love it, use it!

  • I love Ella! I know a 12 year old Ella (full name Eloise) and one 2 year old. But even if I knew more I say use it if you both love it!
  • It is a beautiful name, it just depends on how much popularity would bug you. FWIW I only know one Ella who is 4 years old. I also had a common name with 5 of us in my graduating class but it's never affected me negatively.

  • I've been a preschool teacher for the last three years and not once have I had a classroom without an Elle/Ella/Ellie. Not all of them were Ellas. El- names are so popular right now though. Regardless it is a timeless, classic, beautiful name. It is a lovely name but I wouldn't use it because of popularity.

  • Thank you everyone for your feedback... I don't know any Ella's at the moment, but I think the popularity will just bug me too much -- especially since her brother has a very very unique name. I do like the idea of Stella or Briella? Then he can nickname her Ella or El if he wants? I want to compromise on this but it's so hard!
  • Ella is a beautiful name. It's always difficult to say if it's too popular or not. I know one 5 year old named Ella and in all my years of teaching I never had an Ella in my class. As a teacher you should have an idea of how popular it is in your area.

  • It's pretty, but yes, I think it's way too popular.
