When to introducing foods...?

My baby is celebrating her 3month birthday this week! I believe it's still awhile, but when do you start feeding food? And what do you start with (rice cereal, oatmeal)??

Re: When to introducing foods...?

  • You can technically start at 4 months, although we'll wait till 6ish. Your pedi should bring it up at her 4 month appt.

  • My other kids are 11,9 and 6. With the 11 and 9 year olds, we started with cereal at 4 months. With the 6 year old, they recommended no cereals and we ended up doing baby led weaning. We'll be doing the same with this one.

  • We did 6 months with DS and started him on barley cereal. After that he was onto sweet potato purees.

  • I'm probably going to do 6 months and start with sweet potatoes, avacado, banana, applesauce, squash.  Not necessarily in that order.

We won't be doing rice or cereal but if he starts showing interest in foods at 6 months then I will probably introduce it to him then.

  • I started feeding Skippy pureed peas when he turned 6 months old and never gave him baby cereals (and now he won't eat cereal or oatmeal...). I don't want to start with fruit because babies naturally have a "sweet tooth", so introducing veggies first helps them get used to less sweet foods. Also, I'll start offering this LO kefir at 8 months. I avoided dairy products with Skippy, and I couldn't get him to drink regular milk until he was 4 - he drank vanilla soy, hemp, or rice milk from 12 months until he turned 3. That was a hassle.

  • I started dd on occasional purées at 4 month and will do the same with this LO. I also started whole milk yogurt with her at 6 mo and plan to do the same again.
Try not to over think the food stuff. I spent so much time researching and worrying that it kind of took the fun out of it.

  • We started both of our older kids at 4 mos. For the least chance of food allergies, it's recommended to introduce a variety of foods between 4-6 mos. Our kids are amazing eaters-will eat anything and everything. I attribute a lot of that to early introduction of lots of foods. I will also say that by 7/8 months, they were eating the same dinners as DH and myself.

  • We will also be doing BLW at 6 months again. Worked great with DS1 and everyone comments on what a great eater he is. I think Health Canada actually recommends starting with meat as a first food as a natural source of iron instead of the cereal.

  • 6 months, no cereal, baby led weaning here.

yep same here. No baby food and my kids basically eat what we are from day one.
  • Wow this is the first I've heard no cereal! Good thing I've got a month to research this at least

  • Why is baby led weaning better than starting foods at 4 months and feeding them yourselves?

BLW may also lead to less picky eaters and better fine motor skills. I'm a big fan and plan on doing it.

My 6 year old was the only one we did BLW with and he is picky now, but as a baby/toddler, he would eat anything and everything.
