October 2014 Moms

My pelvis feels like it's breaking.

I probably could post this elsewhere but I am curious if other women are having EXTREME lower back pain? Mine started a couple of hours ago after I laid down on my lunch break and has not let up. It hurts to sit, stand, walk ... bending over and arching my back in are also incredibly painful. Honestly, it feels like my bones are separating -- starting at where my pelvis and spine connect and running down into the bones in my butt cheeks is the best way I can explain it. It doesn't feel like cramps at all, just a constant pain that is more severe with movement. I've been in tears at my desk a few times already.

I did get rear-ended at 8 weeks pregnant and the pain is somewhat similar, though much more magnified. I had not been having ANY back pain otherwise until this. Also, this is my first pregnancy so I'm not sure if this is just regular pregnancy pain or something closer to pelvic girdle pain? My mom said she can remember feeling like her bones were being ripped apart at about this time.

What are you ladies doing for back pain? Are there any exercises or movements I can try to ease this up? WHEW. Thank you in advance.

  • Sorry you're dealing with this.  I've had low back pain throughout, but not quite to the excruciating extent that you're describing.  I take Tylenol, have been seeing a chiropractor every 3-4 weeks for a while now (I think today will be the 4th visit), and find that the child yoga pose tends to help, too.  With the kind of pain that you're describing, I'm not sure how much yoga would help (if it's painful to sit/stand/move/etc., it might be just as bad trying to get into a pose), but maybe it's worth a shot?  Do you have a chiro that specializes in pregnancy, or maybe your OB or midwife could recommend someone, or some other options?  Good luck.  Back pain is no joke, and I really hope that you get some relief soon.

Chiropractor has been my friend. I have had lower back pain off and on. Tylenol and warm baths have also helped.
Hope you can get some relief soon.

  • Oh man, I know what you're saying. I've found wearing a belly band all the time really helps with support. It's all this weight in front throwing off my back. Also I don't know if you do this already but I sleep with a pillow between my legs and pull it up so that it's also under my belly which has seemed to help also. I haven't had to resort to the chiropractor yet but I hear it's amazing!

  • I was regularly going to the chiropractor for my migraines but they have let up during pregnancy for the most part, so I stopped going. I may have to swing by her office today and see if she can help me.
  • It's probably either sciatic pain or SPD. Either way, a chiro would be extremely helpful, and if it's SPD, then I would also recommend physical therapy.

  • I had this a few days ago. Only on one side. Literally from my hip down into my butt. Excruciating pain, to the degree that I couldn't sleep and took a hydrocodone I had for back pain.

I also had it last pregnancy from about 28 weeks on. It was horrid and a big reason I gained so much weight. All I could do was take Tylenol and use heat or ice.

  • I had this a few weeks back and it sounds exactly like this. I went to the DR and they recommended Physical Therapy and gave me some extra strong painkiller-Tylenol wasnt working for me. But it actually went away after about a week and Ive only had minor pains like it since.

I second sleeping with a pillow between your legs. It seemed to have really helped me!
  • That's awful, I'm sorry you're having to deal with that level of pain!

I had horrible back pain VERY early in my pregnancy. I assumed it was just normal "pains" but then I had trouble walking at night, and I wasn't able to sit for long periods. I eventually gave in and went to see a friend who does prenatal acupuncture. She said I had developed sciatica in my back AND that I had too much of the hormone, Relaxin, that releases your soft tissue muscles without tightening them again.

So, I saw her only twice and it changed my life! I was able to sleep again, I could get up to pee and not have to limp to the bathroom...I had so many symptoms I was just writing off that were all part of a bigger issue

  • Might be sciatica. I had it horribly with my first pregnancy... they recommend a chiropractor. Unfortunately, due to past brain and spine surgeries, I am not allowed to see a chiropractor so I can't tell you if it works or not.
  • My pain can b like that from my pgp n it sucks! I only wanted to warn u about the bath as suggested, i love a bath n it really helps alot but i got stuck by pain in my hip the other day when i tried to get out! So make sure someones home, i was home alone lol, had to b really elegant n somehow got on all 4s n got out but nt sure how. :-) hope ur pain gets better. Prob should pop n c ur doctor as i left mine n thats y it got so bad. Good luck x
  • Did you see a doctor after the accident? It could be related and exacerbated by the extra pressure from pregnancy. See an ortho and follow his recommendations .

  • @Jennifer18131 Yes, I did. I went to a chiropractor 3x a week for 8 weeks and had massage therapy/physical therapy. The accident was not bad but the insurance of the person who hit me forked out some cash since I was pregnant, lol. I think they ended up paying over $10,000 in medical bills and repairs for a $1,000 bumper.
