WWYD - Active Summer Trip

DH and I can't decide what to do so I thought I'd get outside opinions of other first tri ladies.

We've been planning a 5 day backpacking trip for this summer for quite some time. The place we're going is a 4+ hour ferry ride one way and there is no fast or easy way to medical care once we're there. I've talked to our RE and my primary care doctor about it. Both said it's fine to continue exercising and increase distance/backpack weight gradually. One was ambiguous on whether we should go on this trip at all and one said it would be fine as long as I listen to my body and don't overdo it.

Part of me really wants to go but cut back on the distance and take easier trails. I feel like I'll be fine but I keep wondering what if. If something were to happen related to the pregnancy at 3/4 months, would a doctor even be able to do anything?

WWYD?

ETA for more details: We went on a 7 mile hike in similar terrain last weekend. I was worn out by the end but our water filter stopped working so we did the last 4 miles in heat without any water. We would definitely have a couple backups this time so that doesn't happen again. We would be hiking 3 - 4 miles per day on the backpacking trip.

If hiking/backpacking is something you've been doing, and are comfortable doing, then there's no reason not to go as planned IMO. You know your limits better than anyone. Obviously stay hydrated and don't push yourself too hard.

Supportive answer: If you feel like you are up to it then do it! Only you will know your limits, so I would go on test hikes before (if you havent already) just to see how you feel stamina wise.

WWJazD: Im too paranoid to go anywhere that is that far away from medical help. Honestly that early on there is nothing that can be done to stop a miscarriage, but bleeding can be a huge concern. I hemorrhaged pretty bad during my loss and was in danger of needing a transfusion. I was glad to be near a hospital.

  • I would go. They can't prevent a miscarriage that early. As long as you are preparing and do as suggested - continue exercising and increase distance/backpack weight gradually - I would think you would be fine.
  • I would go. If you are prepared and in good shape I think that it's probably great for you and the baby to be active. Cutting back on the distance is always an option if it would put your mind more at ease.
  • I would go and take the easier trails like you mentioned. Have fun!

Yup, for me as well. But you NEED like 3 hydration backups, please. Enjoy it!

  • Thanks, ladies. I feel better knowing I'm not totally crazy for still wanting to go and thinking it's okay. We'll keep talking about it and hopefully make a decision before the summer is over! We are so indecisive these days.

I love that you put this into two categories. I always know the right answer to questions, but I can't always follow my own good advice and worry anyway. You are also totally right that every person's tolerance and experiences are different. I would not do it, just because a few days of backpacking is unusual for me. (I'm more of a light elliptical workout kind of girl.)

It's funny how everyone is so different. I die a little inside every time I have to work out in a gym. I get so incredibly bored. Even 30 minutes on a treadmill feels like an eternity.

Same here! I would so much rather go running in the rain or cold than suffer on a treadmill for 30 minutes.
