Dr. had to cauterize my cervix. :-( normal or odd?

At my appointment Friday , Dr. went to check my cervix and found I was 1cm dilated and 50% thinned out. Yay! Progress! But as soon as I sat up I started pouring blood :-( naturally I flipped out and Dr. had me lay back down so she could check where it was coming from. She said that my cervix was really raw and so it had torn a little. She had to cauterize it with silver nitrate, which totally sucked. What's up with that? Now I'm so freaked out about bleeding that I barely want to move. Is this normal?

  • I don't know what's normal and not normal but if the bleeding wouldn't stop I don't think there was a choice. My grandmother had this done when she had my uncle back in the 70's after she gave birth. My son also had it done when the did his circumsision bc it wouldn't stop bleeding. It looked awful but he healed fast.

  • My dr had to cauterize mine last Thursday at my appt. He said due to so much swelling/inflammation and extra blood volume, it's just extra irritable with all the pressure on it right now. After the silver nitrate I had a little pink the next time or two I wiped, but since then I've been fine.

  • I wouldn't worry about it.  It's pretty standard to cauaterize the cervix with silver nitrate for bleeding.  You have a lot more blood going to the cervix right now, so it's going to bleed when it gets messed with.

I had to have this done when I had a biopsy on my cervix several years back.  Holy balls it hurt.

I'm sorry you had to deal with that.  Yuck.

  • Yeah it did not feel great. I'm just irritated cause I was planning on using my husband for sex starting this week (I have had like 0 sex drive this entire pregnancy, plus it hurts!) to try and get labor started, but now I'm too scared that it will make it bleed again. :-/
  • I don't know if it's normal, it has never happened to me. however, I completely would be freaked out either way. Blood is scary

  • I agree with @suzelizabeth that I'd probably call the office back and let them know that now you have a few more questions. Get the ok for sex and perhaps ask what kind of bleeding you should consider normal vs. what to do if it's more severe.

  • I just had my cervix checked yesterday - 1 1/2 cm dilated and 50% effaced - and as soon as I left the office I started gushing blood. I freaked the F out and ran back into the office. By the time the doc got back to the room I was in, the bleeding had mostly stopped, so he just checked to make sure and then sent me on my way.

He said it wasn't uncommon to bleed a little, but obviously I bled more than just a little! He said since my baby is still at station -3, he had to go in really far to check effacement and it must have just irritated my cervix. I've been fine since, but I am also really freaked out that sex might cause me to bleed again! I figure I'll give it a few days before I attempt it!

  • I would call the doc if you are worried. I'm so sorry that happened-- it sounds scary!

OMG that s**t HURTS! I didn't know it could be a possibility after a cervical exam! Double ouch! I'm sorry you had to go through that :(

Is it normal to bleed a bit after a cervical check? Yes. (Found that out yesterday after I had spotting after my exam and had to call the office back after I got home). In your situation sounds like it warranted using silver nitrate-I'm sure they made the best call for your circumstances.
Also- just know that regardless of what happened with the cervical exam and having to cauterize- at this stage in pregnancy any intercourse could cause bleeding. It's just so sensitive right now. If you're worried call and ask the doc on any restrictions but don't freak out if intercourse does cause more spotting.
  • Thanks for the input and other stories! It's always nice to know you're not the only one this stuff happens too :-) I have another appointment tomorrow do hopefully I can voice my concerns then. :-)
