February 2015 Moms

Anyone know what's next?

So I had a few ultrasounds already because of my previous loss (I love my doctors office- they told me "We will do anything you need to put your mind at ease" when I first called them this time around) and my 8 week u/s and first official OB appointment is next Monday. What's next after that? How often are appointments, and what do you do at each? Is it more ultrasounds? More bloodwork? I guess I'll ask at my appointment next week, but if any S+TMs can jump in, that would be great to know!

Thanks!

  • I was told that they see you once a month until you're about 30 weeks, then it's every 2 weeks. Most bloodwork is done in the 2nd tri, although you get it done throughout the pregnancy.

12 weeks - optional first trimester screening -  NT Scan - which includes US to measure neck fold, and blood test

20 weeks - Anatomy Scan (A/S) to look at other aspects of anatomy (spine, organs, etc) for issues

You will have a glucous test for gestational diabetes at some point (I forget when that was) I think the middle of 2nd trimester, that is a blood test after drinking a very sugary drink when you have fasted for 12 hours.

other than that once a month appointments until 30 or 32 weeks

This! And it seems like OBs personal preference when it comes to u/s. I am having one again at 12 weeks but I don't think most people do.

It depends on each doctor, but usually you see the doc once a month, until 30 weeks or so then every two weeks. The last month, it could be every week. Usually there are only 3 u/s, one early on, one at 20ish weeks, and one later on to see the position of the baby. Of course they may have more. Each visit they measure you, weigh you, and you get to hear the heartbeat. And get ready to pee in a cup every time! My doctor also has pamphets they give out for the upcoming weeks. Kinda of a what to expect thing.

  • If my memory serves correctly the future appointments are a little less interesting.  Normally you do vitals (weight, blood pressure, etc) with a nurse.  The doctor comes in and listens to the baby with the Doppler and asks if you have any questions.  They are really pretty short.  For first and I think most of the second trimester you only go about once a month then they go to every 2 weeks then weekly for the last month.  For the last monthish they will check your cervix.  There will be special things like the big ultrasound and the glucose test, but that is how most of the appointments go.

  • Appts every four weeks until 28 or 30 weeks, then every two weeks until 36 weeks, and then every week until the baby shows up. Blood work periodically, gbs test (butt swab) around 38 weeks, anatomy scan at 20 weeks, some offices do growth scans later (mine doesn't). Each appt consists of listening to the baby's heartbeat, weight check, blood pressure check, fundal height check (measuring belly), and going over questions, concerns, or test results. They are all pretty boring.

This is the schedule of appts. my CNM sent out
they do 3 group visits - I think to let us get to know other expecting moms in the area and to meet the other rotating CNMs in the practice
  • Thanks so much everyone! I just learned so much! @jay_cee I had no clue there was a butt swab involved at any point! I guess that's something to look forward to. @oem617 those pamphlets sound so helpful- I hope my office does something like that.

Cervical/rectal swab. But it's nbd. It's usually at an appointment they are doing an internal anyway.

I always just ask at my appointment what to expect next time. I get no pamphlets :((

  • Dreemkin is right, it's nbd. Your pants are already down for an internal check. ;)

  • My midwife lets you do your own swab. You poke it up, make sure you get the cervix, then run it up the perineum and on the OUTSIDE of your bum.  Although most docs stick it up a little, you really don't have to.

I much preferred doing the swab myself.  :)

  • PP's have pretty much said it all. It's a little different at each doctor's office. If you're high risk, it'll be different as well. I get a lot of u/s being high risk (starting at about 16 weeks, they check my fluid levels and baby's growth every few weeks). Most appointments are no big deal and super short. I do love hearing LO's heartbeat every time, though. :)
