PNV Blahs

Do all PNV's have the separate multivitamin and DHA pill now? I have the hardest time keeping down the DHA one, it's like clockwork, <15 minutes after I take them, I get sick. I've tried taking them with food, without food, morning time, lunch time, before bed and it doesn't make a difference, Anyone else having these problems?

Re: PNV Blahs

  • I don't have the DHA pill. Is that something I am supposed to be taking? I just take the regular PNV with folic acid in it.

  • I've tried 4 different kinds/brands and they've all had the DHA pill. I don't know how long they've been doing it, my 1st was 9 years ago and I only had the one multivitamin with folic in it

No, some don't have the separate pill. Have you tried the gummy kind?

  • What kind do you all use? I got ones prescribed at the base clinic but it doesn't have dha in it and barely any folic acid. My ob gave me samples of some but I have a feeling they will be expensive. Is there any you have found on your own? Pre-pregnancy I took a gummy version and LOVED it but don't know if that's acceptable during pregnancy lol

  • You could try taking a spoonful of cod liver oil to get your DHA. It comes in different flavors, and isn't supposed to be terrible tasting. Just make sure you get a high quality one, as I've heard that the quality really varies between brands.
  • I really thought this was going to be about sex. lol

  • I take Nature Made PNV with DHA. It is just one pill. Any vitamin upsets my stomach, so I take it before bed and can usually sleep through the blah's.
  • I have a PNV with folic acid, and then I take fish oil for the DHA (made sure it was purified to remove mercury). That is recommended you take right before bed. I've forgotten a few times and took it in the morning, then spent the next few hours burping up tuna taste!

@alexis.arnone I have seen PNV in gummy form, but I think they have less stuff in it.

When picking out mine, I brought a list of the recommended doses and compared straight to the bottle. I don't understand why one brand doesn't make exactly what our doctors recommend, I like to think it'd be standard across the board.

  • I do not have DHA in my pill and my doctor said that it was fine.  I couldn't stomach the DHA. I am taking Rainbow Light right now...its been great for me. Its all food based, maybe worth a shot!

I take the same one.  It doesn't seem to upset my stomach but I usually take it with food and a full glass of water.

  • My PNV was making me sick too so now I just take a regular multi vitamin that has the closest match of the PNV dosages. My dr., nurse and pharmacist all told me most PNVs are just labeled for pregnant women so they can hike the price up lol, when if you look closely many multi vs contain the same things.

  • I took the Women's One A Day Pre-Natals before getting my RX vitamins.  The One A Day was actually 2 pills - the vitamin and the DHA separate.  My RX (Vitafol-One) is an all-in-one vitamin with DHA.  It came in those stupid single-dose pop-out pill things... I spent 20 minutes last night taking them all out and putting them in a clean medicine bottle so I didn't have to pop one out every night for the next month.

I am also Vit. D deficient, so I'm taking 4000 IUI per day in addition to the 1000 that's in my PNV.

I take my PNV at night and sleep through the blahs - I learned that really quickly with my first that it didn't matter if I ate first or not, I was getting sick, but if I took them at night, I almost always slept through the yuck park.

With my 1st 2, it was just a PNV - nothing extra.

  • I take six prenatals a day. I take ones with activated folate because my body only metabolizes 60% of folic acid. I also take a fish oil and two vitamin ds. It is awful. I get sick every time and it is really really hard to deal with. But I'm just sucking it up. Anything I can do for a healthy living baby is worth it I guess.
