Sleep...

LO is 6 weeks weighs 10 lbs. I was really hoping she would start to stretch out her night time feedings but she hasn't given me more than 2 hours at a time for the last 4 or 5 nights.
Anyone else not having luck with getting more sleep as LO gets older and bigger?
I am BF but thinking if possibly supplimenting with a bit of formula. Could it be that she is not getting full enough?? She does do some cluster feeding at night so I feel like she should be full!!

Re: Sleep...

  • Same here. My son will be 6 weeks on Friday. We actually got 5 straight hours on Saturday night but that is the only time, otherwise it is 2-3. I BF but my husband gives a bottle of formula with the first night feeding. I thought it would help him sleep longer but it doesn't. I'm reading happiest baby on the block so I'm hoping those tips start working and he sleeps longer.

  • Ds is 6 and half weeks and were now consistently getting 3 hour stretches in the night. Not after every feeding but. Once or twice. A couple 4s mixed in there.

It will come! I find if I wait for an actual cry or fuss and see open eyes to get him and feed/change him he will sleep longer as sometimes he just grunts for a few moments, stirs then goes back to sleep.
  • I am BF-ing and formula feeding my twins (6 weeks + 5d).  Last night the smaller twin gave me 4 hours and the bigger twin (9 lbs) went 4 1/2...nearly 5 hours!  I am living for these random events.  Normally I am up every 2-3 hours at night.  I do formula feed before bed.  Sleep...I miss it...the good old fashioned kind of sleep is non existent around here.

The norm for us is 2-3 3-4 hr stretches. We've had a couple nights with a 6+ hr stretch and nights with only 1-2 hr stretches. DS is almost 6 weeks and about 10 lbs. He tends to sleep longer if he just gets formula than if I BF and then give him a couple oz of formula but sometimes it doesn't matter.

We FF and my DS is at least 12lbs and I keep hoping that soon he will start to sleep longer. I know he can because there have been a few random nights where he slept 6-7 hours in a go, but then he backed down to like 4.  :(  I just know if I could get him to eat a little bit more in the evening he would sleep longer, but he just won't eat that much at night.

  • Mine is 6 w 2 days and was on that same night schedule. Up every couple hours. We started semi following the parent directed feeding plan in Babywise although I have read the negative reviews on the book and we adopted a less rigid approach. It's worked great for us. We started late last week and the last few nights she slept 5 and 5 ½ hour stretches. I'm also now swaddling her arms and before I wasn't so that could be also. She hated it before but kept at it and can get them swaddled now. Either way this plan gave me a lot more structure.

DS1 didn't "sleep through the night" (5 hour stretches) until 7 months.  While my husband was deployed, DS1 would sometimes wake up every 45 minutes.  It was totally awesome...

  • Absolutely everything that @sticky11‌ stick said. Sounds like a spurt to me, really common at six weeks. Six weeks is a tough age: growth spurt and things like reflux and colic often peak then, too. It gets better. This, too, shall pass.

  • I complain because DD sleeps terribly (hardly at all) during the day buttt she always gives us 7-8 hour stretches at night. Usually 7-2 then a feeding then back until 6ish and then a quick nap until 730/8. I BF but I can't help but wonder if the lack of day sleep contributes to her great nights,
