How do you tell your male coworkers you are going to pump

How do you tell your male coworkers you are going to pump? Or how do you word it? I feel comfortable talking with female coworkers I am going to pump. They usually thought I am going home because I have my pump tote and then I need to explain it myself.

Re: How do you tell your male coworkers you are going to pump

  • It varied depending on the person honestly. People knew I was pumping after awhile and so I just started saying I had to take a "mom break". People won't generally ask a lot of questions and if they do, I felt free to enlighten them :)

I just say I'm going to pump
  • I'm going to pump milk for the baby. I know it's a little awkward, but I try to act normal because it should be normal.

I'm going to go take a break; meet you back in X minutes.

  • I always just said, "I'm going to pump."  It didn't come up much, but some of the guys had wives who breastfed, so it wasn't really a huge deal.

  • We have a wellness room at work so I usually just say I'm going to the room.  My boss (male) has a 4 year old and 2 year old and was very very pro breastfeeding so nothing is ever said.  At first it was awkward to say oh can we reschedule that meeting I have to pump at that time but now 9 months in I'm just like it's pump time.
  • I pump in my office but we are an "open door office" so it's weird for me to close the door for 20 minutes a few times a day.  I just say "I need to close my door for a bit", and everyone understands what I am doing.
  • I really thought it was going to be awkward since I am one of two females in my company, but it really isn't. If someone is in my office I will just say I need about 15 minutes and they understand. I've also said things ranging from, I need to pump, my boobs hurt and need a break, and I'll meet you at xyz after I pump. Its not a big deal to anyone because I don't make it a big deal.

  • I tell everyone I have a "personal meeting". (We set meetings/appointments in the family room at work) One guy didn't get the hint so I told him I was going to pretend I was a cow at a dairy farm for a while...then he got it :)

  • For those who know I pump I say I'm going to take my "break." For those who don't I say, "I'm still nursing my baby so I need to go pump." They never asking any further questions.

  • I either don't say anything since it's really no one's business or say that I'm going to pump.

  • Well...I have a notorious sweet tooth and everyone knows what I'm doing so it is lovingly referred to as "cookies & milk" in our office.

This is my second baby since I have been working here so we passed awkward a long time ago. ;)
