Sex inducing labor

Does anyone know if this is actually effective? Is this something I'd want to start doing all the time once I'm full term, ie.. Does more sex make it more likely to be effective?

Sorry if this question is silly, DH and I are hoping that I won't need to be induced in the hospital. I'm a FTM and I have GD, so the doctor said they won't let me go past 40 weeks.

    Thanks for the response!
  • All of those old wives tales aren't going to do much. Sex might give you some cramping/BH/light contractions, but your body won't go into labor until it's ready.

  • @flip_flops‌ can you draw me a diagram for that specific sex position? ;)

  • Worked for me! The morning I went in for my induction I was having regular, consistent contractions.

  • I can't remember if it worked, but I tried all the old wives tales (minus castor oil). Dd came on her due date. Figured dh should get some lovin in while he can since he wouldn't get much afterwards for a while.

  • None of those things brought on labor for me.

  • The old wives tales work if your body is ready. If not, any amount of having sex under a full moon while swiveling your hips on an exercise ball isn't going to do much. My last pregnancy regret from DS is the amount of time I wasted bouncing on that stupid exercise ball and walking stairs. I should have sat on the couch and enjoyed the silence.

This. Nothing will work unless your body and the baby are ready. DS was born at 41w4d, and I was doing everything that was supposed to induce labor starting at about 39 weeks. Lots of begging DH for sex ... Not my finest couple weeks. Finally, 2 nights before I was scheduled to be induced, I took caster oil and that "worked". DS was born about 16 hours later, after a long night of being on the toilet between, and during, contractions. I hope things go a bit different this time!

  • I read somewhere (don't remember where) that the only thing that has been shown to actually work is nipple stimulation.

I've heard the same thing. If your body is ready, and you use some of the old wives' tales, it can jump start things a few hours, or maybe even a day or two, before they would on their own. But not beforehand. Gross analogy, but think of it as a scab on your hand. If you ran your fingers lightly over it before it was ready to fall away, it wouldn't really budge without pain. But do it when that scab is hours or maybe a day away from being ready, and off it'll come, nice and easy.

I was put on a no sex restriction after my overnight in the hospital with contractions last week. The OB said it can trigger contractions and labor. H and I decided that once the restrictions are off (36 weeks), we're getting at it because we'll take anything to bring on labor at that point.
That's exactly what I was told. And yeah, I'm going for it again around 36 weeks. Oh, snap. That's like three weeks away. Oh, SHIT!

Yes, but keep in mind your body was already headed in that direction on its own, which is why sex would induce contractions/labor. If you weren't having contractions and the Dr wasn't concerned about PTL, they wouldn't have given you the restriction.

Sex will just make me bleed, crampy and grumpy.  I'd rather wait for labor.

Not directed at OP, more just a PSA:  Prostaglandins are in ejaculatory fluids which can ripen the cervix.  Just remember, all "natural" induction methods are still induction methods.  I always see people afraid of medical inductions but will chug castor oil, strap on a breast pump and take it doggie style which can all result in an uncomfortable labor as well (nothing says bliss like explosive diarrhea  in between strong contractions from nipple stimulation....).  Just remember, baby will come when they're ready.  Trying to get things going as soon as you hit 37 weeks is just going to make you crazy and exhausted.  Also, recall 37 weeks isn't full term - 39w0d - 41w6d
    is the new full term.

Such a great point! I didn't even think of the fact that natural induction is still induction and may cause some discomfort. Thanks!
  • I'm 31 weeks and having sex on a 1-2 times/week basis. Sex only causes a few BH after we're finished but nothing else. LO is not ready to come out (phew) but when he is and if we're still doing our thang by then, I could see it triggering labor.

  • Ugh.... nothing put me into labor.... not going to let the husband pull this trick on me with number two.   It was uncomfortable and I didn't feel anywhere near sexy.

  • It was highly recommended by our hypnobirthing instructor. We are still at about once a week so we may bump that up just before 40 weeks especially since it's going to be a long break afterward.
