Formula Feeding

Water

I was wondering if y'all use tap water, filtered water, bottled water, "nursery" water or what for your formula mixing? And do you sterilize supplies after every use or just the first time? Wash stuff in the dishwasher or by hand? I'll ask the pediatrician on Monday what they recommend for this area but I'm curious what other people do.

  • I use distilled water (bought at the supermarket). Tap water is supposedly safe to use here, but honestly even hubby and I don't drink it without putting it through a Brita filter. I sterilized the bottles the first time but haven't since. I wash them by hand. (I live in NJ.)

LO is 12 months and on whole milk now, but he was using formula up until a month ago.  We used nursery water or bottled water in a pinch.  We sterilized the bottles/nipples in boiling water the first time, ran them through the dishwasher each night, and then re-sterilized them in boiling water every week or week and a half.

We use tap water mostly (cleared by pedi for this area). Bottled water on the go.

Didn't sterilize to start. Just hot, soapy water. Use the sterilizer bags every once in awhile when I remember.

Wash by hand. If I'm going to use the dishwasher, I want to do all of them at once but I usually don't have the time until the next feeding or I don't want to stay up to let it finish.

  • I have one of those big brita filters with a spout on it on my counter. So easy since I give her bottles at room temperature. I never sterilized them but they were hand me downs and I know my bff did when they were new. I sometimes hand wash bottles and sometimes put in the dishwasher.

  • We use tap water or filtered water. DH tells me he sterilized the bottles when we first needed them, but I was out of it so I trust that he did. We wash by hand or the dishwasher, just depending on how much time we have or how many bottles are dirty.

  • I use distilled store brand water and sterilized bottles the first time, hand wash hit soapy water then air dry.
I will sterilize if he gets sick after each use.
  • I always use boiled water (cooled down obviously). DH made a bottle using tap water once and DD drank very little of it. Ugh, wasted formula!

I hand wash everything and sterilize every 2-3 weeks.
  • I used boiled tap water. I drink lots of tea and have an electric tea kettle so there's always boiled water on hand.
  • We used nursery water with DS and will with this baby, too.

  • I was told by our pediatrician to use tap water or nursery water because they both contain fluoride which is important for their teeth. I sterilized all bottles prior to the first use, after that everything was hand washed and usually placed in the dishwasher at some point as well.

Our city banned fluoride in water years ago. I have to say that our water tastes so much better, though it's annoying having to make sure my 3 year gets fluoride rinse regularly.

  • We use nursery water. I sterilized everything the first time and now wash everything.by hand. Once in awhile a bottle or two get thrown in the dishwasher.
  • Tap water, through the Brita filter then boiled.

Confession - I no longer sterilize my bottles (I might once every 2 weeks if I have lots of time but not as a rule of thumb). I wash them with hot soapy water. Sometimes, when I'm super short on time (i.e. in the morning before I leave for work), if I somehow did get to cleaning the bottles the night before, I'll rinse the cleanest looking one and use it. Kind of gross, I know...DS is 4.5 months and my second, so I'm a little less worried about sterilizing than I should be.

  • I use filtered water from the fridge dispenser.
