Where to pump on the road trip?

I am planning to go a 3-day road with parents who came from oversea. My husband did not want the little one to come along and agreed to watch him while I am gone. I just need to find places to pump from Msp to Chicago probably twice on the way there. Where are places I can pump? Where in general people pump on a road trip? Thanks in advance.

Re: Where to pump on the road trip?

  • Why not just pump in the car?

Yeah, I would just buy a car adapter and pump on the ride.

My pump has a battery pack, so I just pump in the back seat while DH drives.

  • I would consider that if I am not the only driver and my father will be in the car too so I am hoping somewhere more private.
  • If you get your cover and just have your dad sit in the front of you're in back or vice versa if you're in front. Pumping in the car is really very doable- just takes a little creativity for privacy, but I pumped in the car many, many times, both as a passenger and more often just parked in the parking lot at work when lack of office space to pump was an issue.

  • I've had to take 2 road trips WITH my baby, by myself- you are going to have it so much easier than I did!! I stopped at gas stations most of the time and parked at the end of the side parking with more privacy. I used a car adapter and just pumped in the car. Really my biggest concern was safety and hoping she would stay happy while I pumped (she had a couple meltdowns...hard to relax and keep pumping when your baby is crying!)

I realize pumping in the car is not the most comfortable circumstance but honestly you will have to go out of your way to find actual accommodations. It's a lot more private than going into a restroom, and as pps have said, you can use a cover. That's what I did.

  • Thank you for all suggestions. I will try to pump in the car and ask my dad to walk around.
  • Chiming in to suggest that you use a car adaptor for your pump.  The battery packs use so many batteries, plus the suction doesn't seem to be as good.

I bought a car adaptor specifically for an overnight trip we took when our 2nd was 5 months old.  It was just my husband and I, and I pumped in the car while he drove.  This is one of the only times I actually used a cover (I just made my own).

I've also pumped in the car while my BIL was with us.  He was in the backseat, and I just used a cover.  I don't use one when I nurse, but I feel like pumping's different.

  • i went to a wedding when LO was 3 weeks old and tagged along in my brother's mini van with his wife and 3 kids.  i purchased an adapter for the pump. i got to sit next to my 7 yo niece who found pumping very interesting. i just made sure i wore a top that was easy to maneuver the pump in and used a blanket to cover up.

  • I pump in the car all the time. Its the most privacy you can get outside of your home. I pump even while driving (wear a hands free bra) and throw a nursing cover over. I've pumped with my parents in the car (with cover on). They're your parents. They understand. Bathrooms are not ideal to pump in. All the noise, smells and germs ... No thank you. The only other option is out in the open (with nursing cover over it). I had to pump at a theme park once and I much preferred outside in a corner with a cover on to a bathroom. So 1) Car, 2) in the open, 3) bathroom
