2nd Trimester

If you've paid for an elective u/s...

For those of you who have paid the money for an elective u/s to determine the sex of your baby, was it accurate? I scheduled a regular 2d u/s at a 3d/4d place (all checked out) to be performed at 16w4d, but now I'm really re-thinking my decision.

Due to scheduling I'm not able to have my a/s until 23 weeks, and the planner/ anxiety worrier in me would really like to just pay the $100 to find out earlier. I really don't want to have my DH talking about what the sex the baby is during the a/s anyways, since I'd like to just focus on how the baby is growing and my peapod's overall health. I don't remember worrying this much the first time around, but I guess I'm just more in tune with the actual purpose of things the second time around.

  • Mine was accurate at 13w5d. But that seems to be more common with boys.

  • Mine was accurate at 16w exactly. My a/s confirmed what we saw at the elective. We're having a girl and apparently after eating she needs a nap and refuses to be woken up even when poked and prodded so we're lucky she was at a decent enough angle to get a peek.

I think it's very accurate after 16 weeks. I did an elective u/s at 16w6d and it was correct. There was no question she is a she, and her lady parts looked the same three weeks later at my a/s.

  • I did not have one, but there is a popular one around where I live that a lot of people tend to go to and it seems to be very accurate and it's not outrageous either.

It remains to be seen if ours was 100% accurate, since our a/s isn't until the 24th.  But it was pretty unmistakable to me, DH, and the u/s tech that it is a boy.  It was $99 and they guaranteed it after 16w--in other words, if they couldn't tell, you could come back for free.  It was money well spent in my opinion.  I always feel nervous at the doctor's office and this scan was really more relaxed.  Plus we got a DVD and pictures.  I would recommend it, but if you live in a big city, call a few places to comparison shop.  Some seemed better/more reliable than others.

  • We had one with both pregnancies due to my husbands training schedule (he's in the Army) and they were both accurate. I was approx 17w with my daughter and I was 16w with this baby. The place we went will let you come back for free if they can't determine the sex and refund your money if they were wrong, as long as you are 16w or further along. The sex was obvious both times but I still waited until after my a/s to start buying things just in case.

  • My friend got hers done & said that it was accurate. It's always a guess until the baby is out.

  • I had it done with my daughter at 15 weeks and it was accurate. I had it this time between 14 and 15 weeks and was accurate as well. The place I went has a money back guarantee after 14 weeks. Honestly, that's all these tech's do day in and day out is determine sex of babies. They know exactly what they are looking for. Each time I've gone they were never less than 100% sure of their answer.

  • My situation is a little different. I had my AS first and baby was too stubborn to see the sex. My doctors office scheduled an additional US for later this month (mainly because they couldn't get great views of her cord). We have a maternity spa nearby that does elective US and spa treatments. My mother took me there the following week for my birthday and they were able to see that LO is a girl. Most places will let you come back if they can't see the sex or refund your money if they're wrong. Everyone i know who's had an elective US has had an accurate result.

  • Mine was accurate at 16 weeks 2 days. It has since been confirmed at my anatomy scan. They have certain things they look for so it should be accurate if the place is reputable. I would google the business for reviews just in case.

  • Mine was accurate at 14.3 weeks (had the elective, they said girl). 18 week anatomy scan confirmed girl. There is a lot of controversy about this topic on here but after speaking with my OB and 2 hospital U/S techs, they all agree it is very accurate. Have fun!! So exciting :)
  • With my last I paid and got one done right at 16w

    It was accurate
  • Mine was accurate @ 17w.

  • Mine at 16w3d was confirmed at our AS. it was a lot of fun! Mine was only $60. I was glad we did it.
  • I had mine done 16 week exactly, I was told it was a girl and the u/s tech got a great angle on baby's potty shot. I go back on the 1st to get a 3d u/s, hopefully baby is still a girl because my mother bought a ton of girl clothes and what not!

  • We did one at 15 weeks and it was accurate!
  • We just had one at 16w3d (or 17 on the nose depending on which of my doctor's you want to go with on that one) We've got a proud baby boy; he had nothing to hide! It was $99 for the 2d scan with gender determination and we got a disc of all the pics he snapped. Checked into baby's brain and its growing normally. It was so unbelievable when we saw him moving his legs and fingers. Our tech was so certain, he put text on the print saying Boy or $100. I was so amazed at how clearly we could see his features!
