LO crying in sleep

My DD has been doing this more often... She cries out pretty loud for like 3 seconds and then is fast asleep again. Is this normal? Breaks my heart that she is having a nightmare or something!

  • Haha! My guy does this too, not sure what it's all about. Freaks me out every time, took me a few times to realize he was still asleep!

  • Mine does it too. Or she will whimper like a little puppy dog for a few seconds but never wakes up. I wonder what they could be dreaming about...?

  • It freaks me out each time she does this. It sounds like she's in pain, but she falls right back to sleep. I am trying to leave her alone until it's a real cry.

  • Oh, yes! It's heartbreaking! I read that babies don't dream; that we don't begin having nightmares until three years of age...so I'm not sure what the sleep-crying could be!

  • @belindahampton‌ that is such a cute pitiful face!!

My DS does that as well, especially lately. I always wonder what they dream about.

  • My son does this too not sure what it's all about but I'm also guessing a nightmare ...

My girl does it too. I've learned to recognize the dream cry from anything that requires actual attention. She'll whimper and look incredibly upset for about 10 seconds and then put herself right back to deep sleep.

    She's a weirdo. :)

  • My girl does it too. She makes an awful face and then cries out really loud. but her eyes never open and she is asleep. we call it her nightmare cry.

DD does this also. Has since birth. It's so pitiful! But she'll also laugh in her sleep too (think Sheldon Cooper). Who knows what's actually going on. We like to say she's dreaming because it's just so darn cute.

DD just started doing this today. She fell asleep on the boob so I just left her there. About ten minutes later her little face scrunched up and she started sobbing. :(

I have read that it can happen as they change sleep cycles, which last about forty-five minutes in new babies.  Ours does it too.
